ide hard drive recognition issue
hi - i've recently replaced my mother board, processor, video card and power supply. for some reason i cannot get the board to recognize my wd ide drive(s). i get xp to load from cd to the point that i want to choose the install and have it format my drive (which was used prior in the pc's previous life). when the system first comes on, it does the ide scan, and sees the cd rw drive. i have also seen my hard drive listed in the ide scan, but when i look at the bios/cmos, it does not show up. the default configuration for this board is raid, which i do not plan to use and have turned off in te bios. this board also supports ata, which i will not be using at this time. below is what i've sent to gigabyte, who makes the board. it will be a bit of a repeat of what i've written so far, but will also provide more detail.
i've turned raid off, and am trying to load xp. when te machine boots, and it does the ide scan, it shows the hard drive (the 80 gb - i disconnected the 160 for now), but when i go into the bios/cmos/peripherals, i cannot get it to recognize the drive, even when i ask it to look for it. therefore, when i get to the point where the o.s. cd is ready to format the drive, it tells me it failed because it cannot see the hard drive. it does see my sony cd rw correctly (i have it in ide1, as per your instrictions), and i have my hard drive in ide2, with te jumper set to master (i have also tried cable select with it, and two different cables - one of the cables that came with the motherboard, and one that i had that know for sur works. please advise. i do not know how to get your botherboard to recognize my hard drives. thank you. Model Name : gigabyte GA-8I945PL-G -------------------------- M/B Rev : 1.0 BIOS Ver : F3 VGA Brand : ATi Model : raedon x300se CPU Brand : Intel Model : lga775 Speed : 2.8hz Operation System : Win XP SP : 1 Memory Brand : Corsair Type : DDRII Memory Size : 1g x 2 Speed : 533 mhz Power Supply : 400 W i've also searched the web a bit to find info. from others with this or a similar board, but haven't found much. thank you for any anyone can provide. jason |

Welcome to PC Mechanic !! ![]() First, ATA is IDE, so make sure that is turned on. Leaving RAID off is OK. Second, you HD should be on IDE1, not the Sony. Try setting the WD hard drive to CS on the end of the cable and use at on IDE1. Put the Sony on IDE2 as Master. Hopefully that'll get you going ![]() TwoRails |

tworails - thanks for the info, and reply. i believe the option i'm given if i set the bios to non auto detect is pata, along with two sata options that always remain greyed out. i will try setting the hd and sony in the way you suggest and see what happens. unfortunately, i can't do that now, but i will be able to when i get home this afternoon, and i'll post the results here.
thanks again, |

ok - the following is my curret condition,
i've now taken that mb back and bought an asus, because i couldn't get either of my wd drives to show up on the gigabyte mb. on this board, everything seemed to be going well until it got to the installing windows part (again), only this time i get 0xf78d663... says i should run chckdsk /f on my drive. i'm pretty sure my drive is ok, and have read what some other people have said on forums regarding this error. in fact, microsoft has a page on it, http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324103 the asus manual says i'll need a driver for my ide set up, although i don't know how i'll do that until i get windows set up. i tried to use the f6 raid or 3rd party adapter part in setup, but apparently that's for floppy only. the good news is this mb saw both my drives (which are chained on the primary ide channel). it did not show my cd rom drive in bios, but did show it as a selection in boot priority, and after i set that, it did boot to disk. the weird thing is i was pretty sure the initial ide scan showed my two drives. the two subsequent ide scans i've seen have shown my cd rom. i guess that's about all i can tell you for now. any ideas? |

Maybe the hard drive is damaged.

You WILL need a floppy to use F6 - if the IDE controller is a 3rd party addon chip, not native to the motherboard chipset. I believe the 945 chipset only supports one IDE channel, any further controllers are 3rd party addons. Which exact model Asus board do you have?

As glc mentions, which mobo did you get? Some Asus boards do have a 3rd party IDE channel that require drivers, but you don't normally set up on that channel. You would normally setup on the standard, no drivers required, IDE channel. It's typically named "pri_ide" (or similar) on Asus mobos.
