Please comment on first new build
Hi, I'm new to these boards. I want to build my first PC and these are the components I have selected so far. Any comments/tips/recommendations?
I'm not sure about the CPU. Could a lesser one also be sufficient enough? My goal is to do some nice home video editing and some gaming. Thanks. You have done your homework very well. You may want to look at a San Diego core processor - a 3700+ should be fine. I would also sub Corsair for that Kingston ram - I've been having a bit of a quality issue with Kingston recently. I also don't trust Hitachi drives yet - they are still Deathstars to me, I've been using Seagate.
That's a wild video card - is the passive cooler that important to you? You can get higher performance with active cooling at the same price. |

The 6600GT is adequate for lighter gaming, but I'd definitely consider dropping the passive cooling version to save money. If possible, I'd suggest upgrading to a 6800GT/GS to create a more balanced system.

Well, maybe he is going for a quiet PC - he did pick a motherboard with a heatpipe northbridge cooler.

Good point, GLC. I think I'd always be wary about passive coolers on the newer graphics card. I use a 6600GT in my main system, which I like to think has decent airflow, and my card gets into the mid to high 60s (celsius) during games.
Saying that, the cooler on the card he linked to does look like a bit of a beast! ![]() Freakitchen |

The passive coolers are new to me, never seen those before.

You can look at the Liteon optical drives, good quality and price and come with burning software. For the operating system get this version of windows unless you need some specific feature of XP Pro . You might need a floppy drive at some point in the setup.

Thanks for the feedback.
Indeed I'd like to have my PC as quiet as possible. What's actually the difference between passive and active cooling? |

Active cooling uses a fan. Passive cooling uses huge heatsinks and heatpipes.
