Looking to see if I'm forgetting/missing anything/just being stupid on this build
I'm building this computer for myself, since my 4yo Dell laptop is acting like the human equivalent (noisy, hot-tempered, and impossible to boot except for a good swift kick from a boot
). My parents might take mercy on me through this computer ordeal and pay for the build itself, so out of my gratitude I'm trying to keep the price down while still making a good box. It's supposed to be a light gaming/multimedia system which I'll be using about 50% of the time for school and work(which entails part-time web design and computer building), 25% of the time for games/movies and the remaining 25% for whatever else may come along, although I'm sure the gaming part will creep up as time goes on . ![]() I'm planning to use an XP Pro upgrade I bought previously for the aforementioned laptop, and scrapping the Logitech mouse for a M$ wireless mouse that I already own and love. I also have an HP 740e DVD-Burner which will supplement the internal DVD-burner. I've also got a 5.1 surround sound system I can use with this build, with an external SB Extigy card if the onboard sound isn't all that good. Prospective build (entirely from Newegg): Plextor Black IDE DVD-Burner PX-740A/SW-BL - Retail Thermaltake SViking VA4000BWS Black Steel ATX Mid-tower Case - Retail NEC Black Floppy Drive - OEM Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB 7200RPM SATA150 Hard Drive - OEM Rosewill R912E Black 19" 8ms LCD monitor - Retail ENERMAX Noisetaker EG475P-VE-SFMA ATX12V 470W Power Supply - Retail (2) Thermaltake A2018 120mm 1 Ball 1 Sleeve Blue LED Light Case Cooling Fans - Retail (one comes with a Newegg sticker, woohoo) Logitech Cordless Internet Pro Desktop 967461-0403 Black PS/2 RF Wireless Slim Desktop Mouse Included - OEM (2) Patriot Signature Series 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Unbuffered System Memory Model PSD251266781 - Retail Intel BOXD945GTPLR Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Intel Pentium D 920 Presler 800MHz FSB LGA 775 Dual Core Processor Model BX80553920 - Retail Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2 - OEM eVGA 128-P2-N368-TX Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail I looked at an eVGA AMD mobo/eVGA video card combo Newegg was featuring but it drove the cost up too much. I planned the build to be able to upgrade in the future, but obviously because of monetary constraints can't go overboard with it now (nor do I really need to). Thanks. |

Looks good except for the power supply (you need a 24 pin ATX 2.0 unit, the correct Enermaxes will have "24P" or "2.0" in the model number) and the motherboard does not support that processor. Are you ready for this? Intel doesn't make a motherboard that supports a 920 yet.
I'd suggest an Asus. The P5LD2 Deluxe and P5WD2 Premium boards are tested and certified by Intel for that processor. You can save some bucks with a Lite-On, Pioneer, or NEC DVD burner. |

Well it was late at night when I wrote this thread so I'm not surprised that I looked a little stupid about the power supply and mobo.
Here's the updated items I switched out at your advice: LITE-ON Black ATAPI/E-IDE DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write Model SHM-165P6S RTL - Retail (I thought the DVD-RAM capability was pretty cool, since we have a DVD camcorder that uses them too) ENERMAX Noisetaker AX Series EG495AX-VE SFMA 2.0 ATX12V 485W Power Supply - Retail ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945P ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail With shipping it goes for almost exactly $1500. |
