Upgrading current system?

Hi All,
I put this system together about 3 years ago and would like to upgrade a few things to kinda catch up. Maybe a new motherboard and graphics card..
I have.....
Asus P4PE motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics card
WD1600JB hard drive
WD 800JB hard drive
Lite-ON LTR -482465 CD burner
Plextor DVDR PX-716A burner
Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz
1.00 GB of RAM

I know that with the newer motherboard that I would have to buy newer memory, right? or could I use what I have now? How could I upgrade and be happier without building a whole new system? Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Barbara

Let me refer you to a thread where a member has the same motherboard, processor, and video card.

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=150997

I'd do something like what I'm recommending unless you are prepared to spend quite a bit on a motherboard, processor, ram, power supply, and a video card.

A new graphics card would be about the only thing worth upgrading. If you went to a new motherboard, you would need to upgrade the CPU,PSU,RAM, and video card- in other words a new build. Many of the things that were standard for your machine have changed to a new standard like PCIx video, different CPU socket, etc.

You might be able to stick a better AGP card in there though (I believe the 6800GS is the fastest available now) and squeeze better gaming performance out. But the power supply is a concern. What brand and wattage power supply do you have?

Oops - that's an AGP 4x slot in there...that would limit the AGP 8x cards a little bit.

Thanks for the quick replies....I was afraid that I would have to replace too much for a better system. Well, my husband has finally learned about how much fun it is to keep up with Gamecock sports on MY computer. Maybe a new faster system isn't out of the question.......
By the way, you folks really know your computer stuff!!! Thanks!

glc, after reading that thread, are you saying that I could use the
ATI Radeon X800XT All-In-Wonder X800 XT 100-714200 Video Card ?
I need a card that I can capture video from my VCR.

If you get the All-in-Wonder version, you can do all kinds of things including watch TV on your computer. It's a pretty darn good gaming card too.

Just make sure you have a decent power supply - it needs to be 350 quality watts.

That system should function fine with the AIW card.

That's a high quality 350w power supply, and that case has plenty of airflow, even if you don't have the optional front fans.

I am still trying to decide on which card. What would compare to the ATI All-In-Wonder card if I wanted to stick with NVIDIA.
Thanks

Oh Someone, please help me out here. I really need to upgrade my old computer...
I was reading about the new GeForce 7800 GS AGP. Will this be better than the X800XT, or about the same.

It should be better, but you won't have the All-in-Wonder features. You will have the additional expense of an analog video capture card and software. The X800XT will game just fine till the rest of the system just can't keep up. It's quite a big step up from the Ti4200 you have now.

Thanks glc,
I'm not really into games. But, I do need to be able to capture video as I do now with my 4200. I just want to know if it is worth the money and will I see a big improvement with my OLD system.
Thanks for all the help.

Well, if you have software, you could get a standard card of some sort with "VIVO". If you aren't gaming, just save the $$$ and stick with the 4200, it's still a decent card for general use. Your system is a very well balanced system the way it sits, I don't think I'd want to piecemeal upgrade it. The only reason to look at the X800XT, much less the 7800GS, is for gaming. More ram may help with your video capture and processing - but note the banking issues described in the other thread.

Thanks glc,
Now, one other question...my sister is using my really old Aptiva and when she views webcams in NC mountains, the pictures are really blotchy or grainey looking, you know, as if it has snow specks. What causes that. Is it the graphics card, the slow computer, or the internet connection? Or all of the above?
Thanks

It could be all the above. It could also be a lousy webcam.

The webcams come in pretty good for me.
I think it is all of the above....anyway, when she gets her new Dell in a couple of days, she will probably be able to tell the real snow from the fake looking snow.

glc,
I missed the banking issue you are talking about. I must have read right over it. What's it about?

glc, I called crucial and they said I already have four banks filled with my 2 double sided 512s. So I guess I will not upgrade right now. That really is the pits...
