Building a laptop
Are there any sources of "standard" components should one want to attempt to build one's own laptop? (I winced while this was written as I think that this may be a silly question.)

No, laptop parts are all proprietary. That's why you can't build a laptop like you can a PC.

The cost related to acquiring the parts for a laptop are not worth it.

Asus offered laptop kits for a while. Don't know if they still do or not. You could select what type of unit you wanted and what options, much like customizing a Dell. Only difference was you put all the parts together yourself. Kinda like a kit.

The closest I came to building a laptop was shorting the motherboard on a couple which were being thrown away because the hard drives were locked and they forgot the password. You short a chip on the mobo, get a new hard drive and voila, brand new notebook.
