Quad Opteron

Great place here guys.

Hello to all

before i tell you exactly what and why i require a quad opteron i should note that i have not built a pc before and i would like to build a quad opteron.

Should i try this myself.
I feel confident that i can do this but i might need a point in the right direction.

I feel i have to learn sooner or later and if someone would be knid enough to walk me through i would be willing to pay.

Ill see what happens.

Are you talking about a building a computer with 4 Opteron CPUs in it or building a computer with a Quad Core Opteron? (these don't exist yet anyway)

Why do you need a computer like this? Are you building a server?

That's 2 dual cores. Overkill if you ask me (I know you didn't) but if you want to do it, open your wallet WIDE.

Dual core socket 940 Opterons start at just under 700 bucks apiece. There are no dual socket 939 boards. Dual socket 940 boards are all server boards and start at $200 and go up from there. They require registered ECC ram. They are large boards and require large cases.

Well at the moment i have a P4 3.2 with 2 gigs of ram. I need 3 times this power.

If a dual core set up properly can give me this then thats fine if it cant then ill have to consider the 2 dual cores.

Its not over kill if i know i will be maxing either system out.

50 audio tracks of simultaneous playback each at 24 bit 96 khz having two or 3 effects processors eq/compresors

then throw in 2 reverbs and 2 delays.

It soon gets eaten up.

You might want to look into the 165 Opterons. Dual core but uses non ECC RAM and more standard desktop boards. If you have some more cash you could get the 170, 175 etc cpus which would give ya more speed.

The 165, 170, etc line of Opterons are dual core (1 physicial CPU but 2 "processors" in it) They are more for the desktop computer rather than servers. They use non-ECC RAM which is much cheaper than ECC. The 165 Opteron is one of the slower, cheaper ones. If you have the extra cash you could opt for the 170 or higher which will give a little more speed.

Recentyl I was looking into building a dual Opteron setup as well. I wanted dual dual core chips (4 cores total) but, looking at prices it was pretty expensive. I'm trying to find a link to a thread for ya....


BTW, its the 165 Opteron that is dual core, the 265 is dual dual core. sorry for the typo.

To get 3 times the processing power of what he has now, he's not going to do that with one dual core Opteron - he's gonna need at least 2. As I said, there are no dual socket 939 boards, he's gonna have to deal with 940 and registered ram.
