cpu/heatsink Questions
I am in the process of ordering parts for my first build.I used the links Panama Red supplied in another thread relating to cpu/heatsink installation.Thank-you Red.Those video's and Artic Silver instuctions were very helpful, but since I'm a newbie I still have some quick questions.
1.I am going to purchase an AMD Athlon 64 3700+.Now to my understanding, there should only be a thermal pad on the retail heatsink that comes with the chip.Correct? 2.The instructions indicate to scrap off pad(on heatsink) with plastic. Will a plastic knife work? 3.What is Best cleaning solvent? 4.I was looking at the pictures(on artic silver instructions),and it seems like they use a big dab of grease.I thought you use A half of a rice grain dab. That's pretty small. Then spread evenly 5.I will be getting a full tower,so hopefully the size of the HSF will not be an issue. What is the best HSF. |

Removing the thermal pad on a retail heat sink may void the warranty on the CPU. If you are not going to do heavy OCing, the setup as it comes in the box is plenty good. As for your ?
1: yes 2: yes or credit card 3: rubbing alcohol 4: a little dad will do ya 5: start with the stock retail on first

Scrap as much as you can with something like a putty knife or a credit card.. Then use rubbing alcohol to remove the rest.... As far as the Artic silver goes use just a drop and cover the chip it self, a little goes a long way.. Make sure the chip is completely covered.. You do not need to put it on the heatsink itself... I need type a little faster.

Good advice, but I also heard the pad is not as effective as the grease.I can start with the retail as suggested, but I hate to switch to a 3rd party hsf and start the process over.I do plan on oc-ing,but nothing more than 10 to 15%.
I know this is not a oc-ing thread, but if you oc your chip,do you oc your ram at the same time.Just a very general question.I will do a extensive search to answer all my questions on oc-ing. |

Goo off will work also.[/QUOTE Sweet!I dont mind spending a few dollars on cleaner to insure proper heat transfer.I'm ditching the retail hsf,and putting on a better cooler.
