Check my first build
I posted about a week ago a tentative first build I was going to attempt, but after mucho research and figuring out all what i needed i've changed the setup quite a bit. See what you guys think. I plan to use it for video editing/audio recording and gaming.

Should I get a full tower case? Anybody know any other places to get the MSI board from? I was originally gonna get the ASUS sli premium but from reviews it sounds like the MSI is better overall and better for OCing (something I plan to do down the road). For the Mobo I need a min of 3 pci slots (rules out most DFI) and onboard firewire. Really would like an SLI capable board even though i'm not using it right now and may never. |

Here are a few. Zipzoomfly has it. If you enter K8N SLI Platinum
in the search box at the top left of the page at Supercompare you can get the results from a couple dozen search engines. I found it at quite a few places. Also check back at Newegg, they usually restock pretty quickly. |

Thanks Joe, but the ones you have listed are the non-sli version. I read somewhere that the SLI version of the board is actually discontinued...so i might be reconsidering my mobo selection. Anyone have a suggestion? (Need atleast 3 pci slots, sli would be nice, firewire port, opteron compatible)

Actually I think I'm just gonna forget SLI altogether...seeing that one GTX can top 2 GT's (I'm sticking with GT for now, but whatever card comes out in the future I'm sure one of those will top two gtxs).

That looks like a nice build. I Hope you have fun with it.
I agree about the whole SLI thing. I'd rather buy a single "superior" card once mine goes out of date. Last edited by Hitokiri; 02-07-2006 at 03:53 PM. |

For a motherboard recommendation, I'd go ASUS simply because they're top quality. The A8N-E has a single PCI-E Slot.
DFI also make quality boards for the overclocker. However, they're considered to be for experienced builders, since they're picky about what hardware they support fully. Freakitchen

the fundamental flaw w/ SLI is that very few want to have SLI "in the beginning" and by the time they wanna put another card, there is a much better one out already

MSI K8N Diamond Plus nForce4 SLI Opteron/Athlon Both in stock at ZZF. The only board at Newegg I found that takes an Opteron is a 940 pin foxconn.

Hah thanks jay, but now I've decided to drop SLI and most likely go with the MSI neo4 platinum you originally recommended
