$750 budget rig...can it be done?
I am helping a friend build a budge pc, would like to game on it. It will need to include OEM WinXP. Suggestions beyond what I have here and critiques welcome.
AMD64 - 3000 venice for socket 754 $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103606 1GB value ram $77 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440 MSI K8N NEO3 Mobo $62 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130493 NEC DVD Burner $38 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827152059 Seagate 120GB HD $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148094 WinXP Pro $140 6600GT $135 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130214 ...I need some guidance on a PSU/case. I THINK the mobo needs a special 20 or 24 pin connecter for PSU, but Im not sure. This leaves about $100 left on both. Last edited by Brad-; 02-08-2006 at 09:31 PM. |

I would steer you towards an Antec Performance TX TX640B Mini Tower Case
w/400W Power Supply. I use alot of these an had very few problems. Monitor?? Have one already? |

Personal opinion, ditch XP Pro for Home edition and upgrade your video card, or the processor. Home edition is 80-90 dollars. Socket 754 motherboards use standard 20 pin connectors, as well as most socket 939 boards.
I would recommend a bit more than 400Watts, at least 450. You can find an Xclio 450W PSU for about 45 dollars, which is an excellent quality unit (I speak from experience). The same maker has a 500W version for about 10 dollars more. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 |

^I second that^ You wont need more then that 450w clio. And if he isnt gonna be doing any heavy gaming. I would suggest a processor upgrade rather a video card. If you do decide to ditch pro. Which i suggest, unless theres any particular feature that u need?

Aspire Power supplies are really shaky, get that case without a PSU and get a decent one with a 24 pin connector. That X-Clio would be fine.

Power consumption should be upwards of 300W therefore I suggested a 400W PSU. but more is better if you can afford it. I was trying to stay within your parameters.

No definately ditch pro and go for home if you need any specific feature that pro has which home does not then there are a ton of easy fixes. its just not worth the extra dough on a budget build. Or you could always go windows corp...if you get down like that...
Do you have a monitor, mouse, keyboard for this new build? Do you have ANY extra parts, like maybe an extra hardrive or CD/DVD drive that you could use? |

For a budget system,I would look at Epox boards over MSI boards, perhaps a Sempron cpu at a faster speed,Sata hard drive, the memory selection is fine, but check out zipzoomfly for that,it's usually a little cheaper,a card that's intriging is the Nvidia 7300GS,has anyone seen any benchmarks on it?
The Xclio power supply is good, most power supplies now support either 20 or 24 pin motherboards, the extra 4 pins are detachable from the 20 pins, this is far better than a adapter,as adapters can be hit or miss. |
