Trouble with my first build...

Well, I finally got all the parts together for my first build:

Intel P4 631 CPU
Asus P5RD1-V mobo (ATI onboard video)
Kingston ValueRam 2 x 512 kit (PC3200)
Western Digital PATA
BenQ DVD-RW
Antec Sonata II (450 watt, 24 pin PSU)

As per instructions, I installed the CPU, stock heatsink with the stock goop, and the RAM in slots 1 & 3. I then installed the mobo in the case -- double checking that all standoffs were properly positioned -- hooked up both the main ATX and 12 volt power to the mobo. I then connected all the front panel leads -- double and triple checked with the manual.

I connected my monitor, keyboard and mouse, plugged the main power cord into my UPS, switched on, and hit the front panel power button, expecting the fans to spin, the PC to beep and the monitor to respond by flashing the BIOS.

Both the CPU and case fan spun up and the green mobo light came on indicating power. But the front panel power, reset and hdd leds are dark, there was no beep from the mobo (audio is connected according to the manual), and the monitor emits a click but stays dark.

I've tried switching memory slots to 2 & 4. Using just one memory stick in diffferent slots, clearing the CMOS by removing the battery and switching jumpers -- but no luck.

I've been at this for what seems like forever, and am getting pretty damn frustrated.

Help please...

James

As that's the new 65nm Intel CPUs that board might not be up to the proper BIOS version. You wouldn't happen to have another LGA775 CPU to test in there?

Also, I'm not sure about ATI chipset compatibilty, however the ASUS site does list the 631 as compatible, but requires a higher BIOS version than may be shipping.

You could also do the usual out-of-case build to eliminate a short as the problem.

No such luck with the CPU.

I'll try the out of case build.

Thanks.

Edit: I tried outside the case with the same result -- so it's not a short.

If this is indeed a product compatibility issue, would you folks know of a mobo that would handle the new Intel P4 631. I'm a first time builder with limited knowledge, and I'm gonna have to find some way to utilise this new expensive CPU.

Thanks again.
