I need a quiet 500+W PSU

As I move forward on my desktop audio workstation build, I need to find a PSU that's quiet...real quiet. It also needs to be powerful...real powerful.

I'm considering a ENERMAX Whisper II 535W Power Supply. Are they okay?

Right now, I'm thinking about a Liam Li PC-V880B chassis and ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard.

Thanks,

Nick

That Enermax is good.

Antecs make nice quite units that put out stable voltages. Try the Antec SmartPower 550W. They also make a high-end line called "Phantoms" that are pretty expensive, but claimed extremely silent.

Thanks a lot. I wonder how it'll fit in the case I'm looking at?

Reviews are pretty mixed though.

If the case your looking at is a standard ATX case, then it will fit fine. Lian-Li cases are pretty big, so im sure it will fit with plenty of working room.

If you have the money, those phantoms are supposed to be very high-quality units. If it dies, as the reviews on newegg suggests, then just return it and get your money back. However, the reviews on Newegg are generally unreliable.

Wow! Those reviews are all over the place! Can anyone recommend a similar PSU that would let me choose the number of power cables I'd have in the box. I'd rather not have unused cables in the case.

Thanks,

Nick

Cable Management is fairly new, I don't know if you would be able to find an ultra-quiet PSU with this feature. Its worth a search on google though.

Thanks for giving me something to research: cable management. I'll look around.

I think he's talking about modular power supplies. The only modular one I would trust would probably be the Enermax Liberty, but it's quite expensive now and puts out I think over 600 watts. I'm not sure if there's different models. Ultra makes these types of power supplies but I would never buy anything from them. "You get what you paid for" applies here so I would avoid them if you come across it. I have an Enermax Whisper II 460 watt and have been overall pleased. Although, it does have a mess of wires that takes some skill to hide away and keep the airflow unrestricted.

I just got the case your looking at.

Big case. Long, Thin, Tall. You just have to remove and put things in the case in order. The instructions are lacking. I had a lot of problems figuring out the hard drive situation. The case will come with rails to put one in the 5.25" cage, or there are some funky flat top screws that will screw right into the hard drive and slide into the 3.5" cages. Take a look at my thread above. there are a couple great links from other people explaining stuff about the case. I really like the look of the case though. I got the black one.

Good luck. I haven't upgraded my power supply to a quiet one yet as I have a fish tank that makes enough noise to mask my computer.

Thanks for the link. This was exactly the information I was looking for about the case. Mine arrived today, a couple of days ahead of the other supplies I need to get started. I was wondering where the third hard drive would go. My guess, now that Ive seen your post and the other thread, is that it goes between the two 5.25 DVD drives. That's just fine with me. I got the black case too. Looks like everything will fit.
