strange results after replacing mobo...
hey everybody. my sister's pc was outdated and beginning to fail so i pin pointed the source of the problem to be the motherboard and hard drive. now ive replaced the hard drive and was testing for video out of the case. as soon as i plug in the power cable, the pc turns on. ive never had this happen before. is it normal? it turns on without me shorting anything. thanks in advance.
EDIT: Sorry about that, i forgot to mention the specs. mobo is an ASUS P4P800 SE(new), 512mb, generic video card, 400w sparkle psu(new) and an intel 1.6ghz cpu, 250gb SATA hard drive (new) Last edited by Nav; 02-14-2006 at 08:40 PM. |

Unplug the power supply from the motherboard, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in.

sorry ive havent been able to reply quick enough. ok, the first problem still persists, but now i have no video. so i tried replacing it with a asus 9250 128mb vid card, tested and works on other machines. still no video. im praying to God right now hoping its not the cpu that has died. are there any other suggestions/feedback out there? Thank you very much for the help so far. Any more would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: ok i tested the cpu on the old mobo, works flawlessly, im beginning to think its the mobo. i'll see if i can rma it and ill get back to you guys/gals. Last edited by Nav; 02-17-2006 at 09:02 PM. |

i have one last question: my cpu is a Pentium 4 1.6GHZ, not sure of the core, and was purchased in November-ish of 2001. is it possible that the cpu is not compatible with the mobo?

Nope - that mobo will take either a Willamette or Northwood 1.6.

Don't touch that with a 10 foot pole - it's a Via chipset.

Newegg's price doesn't seem particularly good, but this Asus MB is one that is well respected by the Intel using fans:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131484 P4P800 (The OM's first query hadn't named the MB until edited) Here are similar s478 MB's to consider, many less expensive than the Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...TTR22=&ATTR23= I would take that model number over to Price Grabber (or whatever price comparison site you prefer) and see if you can't beat the Newegg $90 price by a bunch somewhere. My own past experience with Tiger is neither bad nor good, but there have been plenty of enthusiasts who've been burned there, so deal with them cautiously.

Thanks for the replies people. Kiwi, that asus is the one giving me problems. plus im canadian so newegg is out unfortunately. is via chipset really that bad? im 100% certain she wont be taxing the system hard or anything, she uses is mostly for school. if i still shouldnt then what about this:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...582787&CatId=0 my sister is really on a budget and cant afford a decent mobo and cpu. one last thing: does anyone know anyplace in canada that ships/located and stocks motherboard and cpu combo. |

I used their site because they are quick to load on a dial-up account like mine, and even suggested checking the specs there and using a price comparison engine to shop pricing, but I've added a slightly more generic Intel 478 and chipset 465 link to my original reply now. Personally I haven't ever had trouble from Via, but the newest product of theirs that I have direct experience with is their KT133A chipset for Socket A (which was designed several years ago).
