PC boots for half a second.

Last night the computer I had build about a year ago was idle then shut off due to what I belive was a power surge. Since then when I power it on the fans start to spin and all my lights come on (Tubes on the front, Fans have leds including PSU), then shuts off in less then a second. Can it be the PSU even if the system is getting power (The built in ethernet on the mobo Lights up when off as well)?

My specs
AMD Athlon 2600+
MachSpeed motherboard with V4MDMP chipset
2xRoswell DDR 2700 512
Aopen Geforce 6600 GT AGPx8

Oh and one more thing: After it shuts off it wont power up again untill I unplug the power cable from the PSU

Thanks in advance

Yes likely suspect if now faulty power supply due to the power surge.. And yes it can act like you are describing and be a bad power supply, because it may not be dead completely but can no longer supply the amount of needed power to run the PC.

Try another PSU and see if that isolates the problem. Good quality PSUs only run about $50.00, but you probably want to isolate it as the problem first.

Replaced the PSU and it booted up like a charm. All the power readings looked good except for the -12 volt which was in the red at -13.5. HaHa can this be a major problem?

Thanks again

What did you use for a replacement PSU? Off spec voltages can be either the PSU or the motherboard.

I had a 450w that came with the case and replaced it with a 450w by VIO.
The one I had before didn't have this problem. At least I don't think so, I might not of checked after I put in my new video card (Went from a Geforce FX 5200 to a Geforce 6600gt which is a big deference power wise it even has a additional power slot). Am I looking at this all wrong? Could it be because It can't handle my video card?
