reinstallation problem!

I already have win xp sp2 installed but i want to reinstall it. so i put the cd in and wait for it to load all those drivers and when it says loading windows it crashes and i get a blank screen.

but i am able to go in to the old windows xp install and nothing seems to be a problem! what do u guys think is wrong w/ this system ?!

does the setup load into the ram or it loads into the hard drive ?! cuz i've just tried the hard drive on another system and it shows up under the installation ... don't know it crashing when it says loading windows ...

Considering the issues in your other thread, you have a hardware problem. Have you flashed the bios yet? You may have defective ram or even a defective motherboard on your hands.

XP will not reformat the 'C' drive while it's in use.
Do you want to reinstall XP or do you want to repair the old install?
In either case you have to boot from the XP disk, which means you go into the bios and put the cd-rom first in the boot order and then exit and save ( You put the XP cd into the drive before you do this. ).
A full reinstall will involve a format so be sure you save to disk any data you want to keep.
A repair will spare your data.
Post your specs and tell us what sort of XP cd you have ( A restore from a company like Dell or the Microsoft disk.).

this is a different setup from the one i had in the other thread ... the celeron d in the intel board is working fine other than the temp not being able to show in windows ...

this setup is a athlon xp 2800+ that i striped from my girlfriends dying e-machine .... it's on a soyo kt880 dragon v2 board.

well it finishes loading all the drivers right before it ask me which drive i want to format then it shuts off ....

i've tested the hard drive on the other machines and it would detect it ... i could install xp on the other machine and then put the hd back into the soyo and it would probably boot alright ...

just don't understand why the installation would crash before detecting the hard drive now when i could install windows off the soyo machine before.

it's not a dell system disk. the disk runs fine on other systems.

Time for hardware diagnostics - start with memtest86+. You might have a shaky power supply.

If it's not a high end video card, you can try it for troubleshooting.

what's the difference between cpu external and cpu temp on die?!?! because that seems to be the problem.

i removed the cpu and cleaned it up cuz i had problems earlier with it. found that there was thermal paste on the top of the cpu and that fixed it. i swear applying thermal paste is a special technique.....

the problem w/ the cpu temp is that the cpu external says 51c while the cpu temp on die says 75c and the automatic shut off is at 85c(i don't know if it's on die temp or external temp). the soyo hardware monitor in windows only reports the 51c part or may be incorrect totally!

now i can boot and setup and it detects all hard drives. i guess the cpu gets really hot when you get into the setup part?!?! oh well thanx for the help!!

btw what if my hard drive has a missing pin in the ide slot ?!?!? while that cause problems later ?! cuz it's booting and installing pretty smooth right now.

The missing pin is normal.

How to properly apply thermal paste:
