Pre-Build Rituals
For those of you who build a lot of computers...
Do you go through any "pre-build" rituals? That is, do you collect all the updated drivers you'll need, make disks, assemble tools...whatever? I'm excited to build my first computer. Any advice as to how you get ready to build a computer is welcome! Thanks, Nick |

um, mostly the drivers come on the CD's and/or floppys. however, if we do need drivers we just put it on a USB drive and then just transport the drivers onto the new computer and do it that way.

None here. I just make sure I have a clean working space and that I'm not wearing anything that builds up static electricity. Make sure you ground yourself frequently inorder to discharge any you may have picked up.
All of the drivers you need come on CDs with the hardware that you use. You just load them after you finish installing the OS. |

Make sure you have plenty of room on a clean desk. Don't rush when building and keep your boxes and parts organized. Look over the manual for the motherboard twice before you start assembling.

I perform a ritual tribal chant that I learned in the Tibet high county. It consists of arranging all computer parts in a circle around me while standing on one leg during the 12 minute long vocalization. All pets in the surrounding area mysteriously disappear during this time but that is another story.
I then blindfold myself in readiness of the upcoming build. I then commence at building the PC by touch only. (I watched a lot of Kung Fu episodes in my childhood). When the new machine is built I do a power up test by poking the power button with a 9 foot stick while crouching behind the couch (I have had to grow my eyebrows back 6 times now after 5 previous builds but again...that is another story). Next I usually salvage whatever parts have survived, go to Newegg, Zipzoomfly or Chiefvalue and get more parts for the next victim....errrr...build. |

Thanks, guys, for the help. I know that sometimes there's newer driver versions than those that come on CDs. It sounds like I should install the drivers that come with the device first, then update them later, once the computer is up and running.
Can I use a USB drive instead of a floppy drive for installing drivers? I have a 1GB jump drive that might work well for this. Thanks, Nick |

Actually, every driver that you need to install comes on CDs (with the coresponding harware). There is no need for any floppy/USB drives. after you partiton the HD and install the operating system, you then insert the CD and install the drivers. When you do this, you'll know what I mean when I say that it can't get any easier.

Just take your time and make sure you read all the manuals before you start building. Take frequent breaks in the building process. I spred my first build out over a weekend, never working more that a half hour at a time. It's overkill but it gets the job done correctly. Now, I can probably knock a build out in a couple of hours.

The common mistakes always occur when one rushes - such as forgetting to connect everything and not placing all the standoffs or something like that.
Drivers are on the CDs (but you will have to update your Video Card one after ward mostlikely) Read the Manuals... Take it nice and slow. Oh and don't forget to do this... it is very important (lol jk jk )Quote:

Actually, depending on the motherboard you may need to install some of the drivers or particularly the SATA controller from a floppy drive. The USB drive might/might not work. Go to the motherboard makers website and download the online manual and check whether you will need a floppy drive or not, and whether a USB drive would be an alternative.
