First build - fan problem

i wonder if any of you could give me some advice please?

I've just built a new PC and it seems to be running generally really well (touch wood...).

However, when i switch it on I have a message saying that the CPU fan is running very low or not at all - hit DEL to enter set up and disable this message or hit F1 to continue. Also, the fan does seem to run very high all the time when all I've really had time to do with it up to now is surf the internet a bit and dl some software bits.

Any idea what's causing this?

Cheers in advance.

Oh, and it's a Celeron D processor 2.66g and the motherboard is an Asus p5nd2.

I just finished mine up this morning and had the same issue. I started it up with the side panel open and saw the error on the monitor. Looked inside the case and a stray wire was in the way of the fan thus not allowing it to rotate.

Hopefully yours is as simple as that.

I actually checked that since there seemed to be wires going everywhere but the fan is actually running fine.

Check the bios settings for fan control - it may be set to speed up and slow down the fan depending on temperature.

Do you have a system monitoring program that came on the drivers disk for the motherboard? Asus usually includes one - Asus Probe.

If it's installed check on the fan there - I've had a problem with my last build where the BIOS and the program said the fan was not spinning, but in reality, it was spinning just as fast as all the other fans in the case.

I've just checked asus probe and it seems to think none of the fans are running.

how did you resolve this problem on your last build?

Asus Probe will only tell you the speed of the fans that are being powered by the 3 pin motherboard connectors. If you have your CPU fan plugged in using a molex adapter straight into the powersupply, I would run it off the motherboard because if not you have no way of knowing if it dies on you. What kind of temps are your getting? what kind of motherboard are u using? if it's an asus make sure "QFan" is disabled and if you want to use it I would put the target temperature at the lowest (which is 52 on mine) which is kinda high IMO. I'd like to see Asus give an option to have the target temp lower.

It's an Asus P5ND2 motherboard.

CPU temp at the mo is 42 degrees. The fan is currently wired straight into the motherboard.

Where can i find QFan?

check your motherboard manual for QFan, it's in the bios, I believe it;s under hardware profile or something like that. On my MB its the first thing listed under it's respective tab (i think it hardware monitor maybe). look around its in there or check your book

That wouldn't happen to be a variable speed fan with a switch to change speeds would it? If so, try putting the switch on high.

OK i've managed to get the cpu fan detected (like an idiot I had wired into the wrong fan socket on the motherboard).

However asus probe still can't see the power fan and the cpu fan seems to be running very fast still.
