audio and front USB problem

Hello all!!

I just finished up my new rig and am in the process of getting everyhing up and running. I'm using an ASUS K8N MB and have installed the on-board audio drivers, but am unable to get anysound from either the rear or front panel audio jacks. I've looked on the bios for an on-board audio setting but can't find it.

In addition, the front USB ports are not working.

Does anybody have some insight?

You guys have been great in helping me get this thing up and running!!

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Hi,

There is a setting, maybe it's called something like AC97. Have you checked whether the onboard audio appears in device manager ? If it appears there, without a question or exclamation mark next to it, then it has been installed correctly.

Did you connect them to the onboard header of the motherboard, and did you also enable the front ports in BIOS.
On my board (also an ASUS) you can choose how many ports you want to enable. Since there are 4 ports on the back, you'd need to choose 6 or 8 in order to activate the headers as well.
But you are sure that you connected the wires right, aren't you ? A wrong wiring will fry the USB header and probably the device as well.

I took care of the audio issue. I had the digital audio not the AC97 connector connected to the MB. I do have the usb cables from the front ports connect. The firewire is coiled up nicely out of the way. I'll take a look into the USB stuff on the bios.

Thanks again!

OK ... I found out some stuff.

I have a Cooler Master Centrurion case. There are two USB ports on the front panel. When I put my USB Thumb Drive in the port on the right, it is recognized and all is well. When I put it on the left, I get an error message saying an "USB device not recognized" has been installed.

I changed headers and have the same results. I also tried a different thumb drive and had the same results.

Just wanted to provide additional info.

Thanks!

Some usb connectors use a different wiring config. If there is two black wires in the connector, they may need to be switched. Check your case/mobo manuals and see if the connectors match up. Odd tho that one works and one doesn't. Look at them closely and make sure they're wired the same.

Both USB ports are wired into the same connector. Each port is on it's own MB connection, but they share the same physical connector.

Does this offer any additional insight?

well ... I'm still at a loss as two why only one of my front panel USB ports works. I have them both connected to the USB56 header through a common connector - there is one physical connection for both USB ports. I can take a picture if it would be of any use.

Again, the problem is that a USB thumb drive is only recognized in one port. When plugged into the other port I get a message stating that the USB device is not recongized.

Opening up the USB section in the Control Panel shows the following USB devices installed:

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Unknown Device
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

I'm not sure if this helps, but more info is better than not enough ....

Thanks again

Jeff

You have a defective header. Only one side is working. It's either the motherboard or the case.

If I put the connectors for the front port USB on the USB78 connector, the same thing happens. I'm assuming we're looking at a defective USB on the case.

Thanks again for all the help.

Now to decide if I tear it apart and ship it back or just deal with it ...
