Looking for a good Motherboard

Well I am about to upgrade my computer and buy a new motherboard. I am thinking in the MSI or Abit way since my last two ASUS motherboards have been peices of crap. I am looking for a very good motherboard. Playing alot of games and programming is the extent of what I use a computer for. so any good suggestions. MSI k8N Ive heard are pretty good. right now I have a ASUS A8v-E Deluxe and hate it

thanks in advance

Most think ASUS to be top quality, although I think they did start outsourcing some of their manufacturing awile back.. I'm running a SOYO board right now and it is fine, but they scamed me out of the promised Manufacturers' rebate, so I'll never be buying from them again.. I should have sent the stuff registered mail but I did not.. Live and learn....

The top brands i can think of right now are ASUS, Intel, ABIT, and DFI. You've been unlucky with ASUS, they are superb boards when coupled with the correct chipset (your A8V has a VIA chipset...which aren't too good).

I've had good results from both MSI and Gigabyte too, they both sit in the 'second tier' of quality.

The fact that your board isn't good is the fact that it is using a VIA chipset. It has nothing to do with ASUS's quality, they are probably the 2nd best motherboard manufacturer out there (with Intel being number one). If you do decide on the K8N make sure you get the Neo4 version since it is socket 939 and PCI-E, the same as the A8V-E.

If you want my opinion, I would get the ASUS A8N-E, it is a high quality board with a high quality chipset. I know you don't like ASUS now, but it's arguably one of the best boards out there... ASUS's quality is better than MSI's. A crummy chipset (ie, VIA) can make the worlds best board stink no matter what the brand, so whatever you decide on, don't get a VIA chipset, for AMD, nForce is the choice.

interesting....I didn't know the chipset played a role like that in it. so for ASUS you think a A8N-E is where to go?

The A8N-E is a great socket 939 board.

Not sure I'd categorize all of VIA's chipsets as "crummy" (K8T800 was an excellent chipset), but VIA's K8T890 is not where VIA shines: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mai...ve-deluxe.html

I've had nothing but success with Asus boards.

Ah, well, there are always exceptions then. Though as a general rule of thumb, I haven't heard good things about VIA, but I suppose if you luck out and get a decent one...

If you want to save a little money, the Asus A8N5X is a winner. It's a basic no frills board.
