New Build Won't Boot
I have finished assembling the following system:
Motherboard: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe CPU: Opteron 165 Graphics Card: Albatron 7800GTX Hard Disk: Western Digital 1500ADFD Memory: Corsair CMX1024-3500LLPRO X 2 PSU: Antec Neo HE 550 Case: Antec P180 (No case speaker) Unfortunately, the system won't boot up. Flipping the switch on the power supply causes the motherboard onboard LED to light up, but pressing the power button on the case elicits only silence. I have done the following to troubleshoot the problem: -Check power supply switch connection (little triangle attached to PWR and not to GROUND) -Removed one of the memory modules (remaining one is in B1 slot according to motherboard manual) -Removed motherboard from case and placed on cardboard box. -Removed heatsink, reseated CPU, laid heatsink on top of CPU without clamping it down (heatsink fan remains attached). -Detached hard disk SATA cable from motherboard. -Shorted PWR SW connector with a screwdriver. -Detached power cables, removed CMOS battery, reset CMOS by moving jumper, replaced jumper to default, reinserted battery and reattached power cables. After each of the above I tried to boot up, but to no avail. No fan movement, nothing except the motherboard LED. I did not hook up the monitor or floppy drive during any of these tests, since I didn’t think they were pertinent to getting more than the motherboard LED to turn on. At this point I am thinking it can’t be anything else but a bad CPU or motherboard, but I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone has some suggestions. If it is a bad CPU or motherboard, is there anyway to tell which? Any advice would be welcome. Thank you. |

It is the wrong type of CPU for the motherboard the types of CPU's supported are Athlon 64 FX/Athlon 64/Athlon X2 that is why it will not boot or nothing will come on.

Computerguy2 - did you verify that with the Asus CPU compatibility chart? I bet you didn't, because that processor is listed there as supported starting with bios 0703.
akimeso, you may have to have Asus ship you a replacement bios chip, or borrow a lesser processor to get it up and running and flash the bios. Most plain vanilla Athlon 64's are supported with all bios versions. |

Thanks
Thanks a lot, glc. I don't know if I can get Asus to send me something or find a friend that has a vanilla AMD 64, but it is nice to know that my hardware probably isn't bad.
One thing though... looking at the bios chip it has the following lines written on it: N32P9 0903 B83E GS B07 The second line looks like it could be a Bios version, and if it is, it would come after version 0703. Do you think this number is the BIOS version or just something else? Thanks for your help. Last edited by akimeso; 02-27-2006 at 05:56 AM. |

Neo HE 550 Compatability Issue?
I found this thread on Anandtech:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...readid=1741934 It seems there may be a compatability issue between the A8N-SLI and the Antec Neo HE 550 which causes the PC to not boot like in my case. I have a Revision 1.1 A8N32-SLI board with BIOS version 0903, and from the thread it looks like I should have BIOS version 1009 to solve the problem. Not sure if the problem is the same for my board too, but I guess it couldn't hurt to try and borrow a friends PSU to boot up the computer or get Asus to send me an updated BIOS chip. |
