Need Help Puting A List Of Parts Together!!

Hey guys. I am looking into building a computer for gaming only (the best). I am plainng on spending about $3,000. I have a problem with picking what parts are the fastest and have the best quality. I was hoping if anyone would help me put a complete list of computer parts I need to build my own computer.

Thanks

Does the $3000 include a monitor, operating system, and peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, speakers, printer, and scanner?

Any preference towards AMD or Intel? (I'm guessing Intel since you were asking about DDR2 in the other thread)

Get the X1900 series - the X1800's weren't that great and are being discontinued (or so I've heard).

Look at a hard drive(s) with a 16MB cache, they are a few bucks more but they are faster.

I would get an X-Fi XtremeMusic - I think it's cheaper and it supports extra sound quality in games like BF2.

You've got the wrong memory there - I believe that's laptop memory. You need DDR2-533 (240pin DIMM). And I would avoid Kingston, I've heard some problems with them lately - I'd look at Coarsair.

You know, on the budget, you might look at getting one of those 9xx dual cores.

Thanks for the tips. I did got the wrong kind of memory. The X-Fi is $100 more than the one I was looking at. You know anything else I would need at this point to get the compute running health(hardware wise)? I also have a hard time decide which case I want? I have changed the mother board to GigaByte GA8NSLI Quad Royal Motherboard. So based on the information I provide, can you help me find a case will fit and look nice. Should I get aftermarket fans and the power supply?

list of mods
2 Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB Hard Drive

ATI Radeon X1900 XTX Video Card

GigaByte GA8NSLI Quad Royal Motherboard (because of the need of two pci express slot to support the video card)

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 4 Pro

Intel Pentium 4 650 w/ HT Technology - 3.4GHz Processor (you think the cpu is fast enough for the next three years)?

ThermalTake Silent PurePower 680W Power Supply

Corsair 1GB PC2-4200 DDR2 DIMM Memory

First of all, you only need one PCI-Express x16 slot for the X1900XTX -- although it will block another slot from being used. This motherboard is plenty:

Foxxcon 915A01-P-8EKRS2 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915P ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Secondly, you don't need more than about 500 watts for that system. In fact, this 480 watt PSU should do fine:

Xclio 480BL ATX 480W Power Supply

Are those hard drive Serial ATA? Are you planning on getting optical drives?

What kind of case do you want? Flashy? Understated? Cheap? Expensive? Quiet? Loud?

The website of the video card said it will require two pci express 16 slot space required (meaning only use one but it will take two space)? As for the power supply, would be a good idea to buy the bigger power supply incase i decide to add on more things later?

There is only one connector; thus it's only going to use one slot. However, because the cooler is fairly large, it will block the slot right next to the x16 slot. On the Foxconn motherboard I picked out, that's just a PCI-E x1 slot, which you're unlikely to use.

If you do, the largest I would get is an Antec 550 watt. My friend has a computer with an Athlon 64, GeForce 7800GTX, 2 GB of RAM, several PCI cards, four hard drives, and three optical drives. His PSU is 480 watts; it gets overwhelmed when he adds a fifth hard drive, but not before then.

If you are spending that much, get an Asus motherboard with a 945 chipset - one of the P5LD2 series. Consider a dual core processor.

My understading of the dual processor is great for if you want to do more than one thing, and It will prob run me about 500 more just for the processor along. I am only using it for gaming. Unless you can find me a list of parts I need for around that price range.
thanks

You don't need two PCI-E slots, much less 4 x16 slots. The video card only plugs into one slot, but the size will make the slot below innaccesible - it doesn't matter what's there. You can't use the SLI feature of that board with an ATi card so it isn't going to do much good.

That's one of the boards glc is referring to, that one will work just fine.

And like thefultonhow said there's no need for a 680W power supply, something like this will work.

I would seriously consider getting a dual core...it will be more future proof than a single core.
