Core Upgrade under $1,000 - please review

It's getting to be about that time for me. The new games are on he horizon, and I'll soon be feeling the generation gap. These parts will be swapped into my first build, while the older parts will be put to good use as the core of an HTPC. What do you all think of this set-up? Could I get a better deal?

I will be adding the RAM in the list to the 2 existing sicks of 512 for a total of 2 GB. I was wondering if 4 sticks if 512 is the best way to go or not. As always, thanks in advance.

Nice parts selection.

Adding RAM is fine, assuming your other two sticks are PC3200. 4x512 is a good config to have...it allows dual channel operation.

Thanks Freakitchen. I vaguely remember some older models not taking well to having all 4 slots in use. I wanted to make sure that wasn’t a known issue with what had I picked out.

I think having all slots filled was only a problem with the NForce3 chipset boards, that didn't have dual channel operation. Might be worth seeing if someone wants to correct me on that one though...

Thats right, that's where I heard it. I'll do some googling (is there an accepted spelling for that world???) I didn't think it would be a problem, but I wanted to make sure before I plunked down near $200 for a motherboard.

EDIT: I did some extra research. There doesn't seem to be any major issues with this board at all. I should have done that reading before posting.

If you want to save some $$$, you really don't need that Seasonic - there are very suitable PSU's for a lot less than that.

Would one of the Antec 500watt SLI PSUs be enough do you think? I figured overkill wouldn't be a bad idea in case I get the urge to add a second 7800GT later on. I'm a college student so yes, if I can get the same quality for less I'll go for it.

Sure - the TPII-550 should be plenty.

Very nice. That shaved $75 off the cost. I was considering upgrading the CPU from the X2 3800+ to the 4200+, but I'm not sure it's really worth it. I'm sure not going to be getting a higher end video card. THe eVGA 7800GT seems to be the most powerful current gen card that still has a sane price. The prices of the few higher are way out there.

Actually, the integrated memory controller in most of the Socket 754 chips and the ClawHammer and Winchester Socket 939 chips didn't like having all slots filled. Revisions to the memory controllers on the current Venice and San Diego cores and the X2s fixed the problems.

Going to the 4200+ is not worth it, but to a Toledo core might be. That's a pretty steep jump though.

Yep, didn't think so. Thanks again for the help. Now I just need to research my second monitor. I figure as long as I am putting in such a strong video card, I might as well get a monitor with DVI so I can get the most out of it. If I'm spending the money anyway, I can't think of a logical reason not to get one :P
