I would get the OEM one from Newegg if it were me, and save the extra money.

so I assume it does here too). The lil' sticker you put on the side of the case and packaging is what costs so much more for the retail version, as well as MS support.

With the OEM version, you don't get any fancy packaging, manuals, or support from M$. That's the only difference.

oh... the OEM is the same as the other one. the program is all in all the same. only the fancy packaging, sticker, etc. is the difference. so it's ok to get the OEM then.

Dang I am a slow typer - 4 posts while i composed this.
Quote:
Retail - A nice big retail box - thrown away by consumer A skinny little pretty much useless booklet, skimmed and then put aside probably never to be opened again. A nice big card board CD holder with the install key stuck to it. A pain cause it just begs to have the CD put into a spare jewel case and the card board holder tosed along with the key- no more installs for you without it! Three calls to MS for support. OEM Disk- no box, a paper CD sleeve, no useless booklet, no MS support, install key stuck to outside of the shrinkwrap - this is the only tricky bit - do not lose this key in your haste to open stuff up. I cut the adhesive key from the shrinkwrap (not pulling it off to stick onto something like MS says you should) and then tape it to the inside of the front cover of a jewel case so you can read it with case closed- the sticky tape is on the shrink wrap behind this key. Another good idea is to write the code on the CD with a marker pen. Oh yeah 100 USD still in your pocket.

I bought an OEM version of 2005 XP Pro Media Center with remote for $140. It came with 2 disks labled Disk 1 & Disk 2. They worked perfect. I should mention that it took me 2 days to figure out that when installing, while disk 2 is in, the program stops and says "please insert the disk labeled Service Pack 2", what to do since it doesn't come with a 3rd disk. You have to put disk 1 back in. It was all there. What a mind blower.
No one to call. |

Vio has Windows XP for $66.93... but the difference is that it's labelled "OEM Branded" instead of "OEM"... what's the difference? o_o
