New computer build
This will be my first computer build. I am trying to build this cheap with the idea of upgrading parts in the future. This computer will be used mostly as a Autocad workstation, maybe a few games. These are the parts I am looking at so far:
Motherboard: ASUS A8R-MVP Socket 939 ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 CrossFire ATX AMD CrossFire Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131584 $95.99 Processor: Upgrade in future when dual core are cheaper AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 E6 Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103568 $153.00 Video card: Upgrade in future to ATI Radeon X1900 Crossfire Edition SAPPHIRE 100110 Radeon X300SE HyperMemory 256MB 128-bit DDR HyperMemory (64-bit 128MB Onboard VRAM) 128-bit DDR PCI Express x16 Low Profile Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102627 $52.00 Memory: Add 2GB in future CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145480 $76.99 Hard Drive: Already have one exterior hard drive. SAMSUNG SpinPoint P80SD HD040GJ 40GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152023 $49.00 Total cost: $426.98 I already have a case, power and cd drive, but I will need a operating system. Is 350w power going to be enough? What does everyone think? |

1. Get the Asus A8N5X board. Crossfire is unnecessary and the Nvidia is a better chipset.
2. Spend an extra $15 now for a 3200+. 3. Don't get a Hypermemory card. Spend another $20 and get a X550 if you are looking for a cheap card that will get out of its own way. 4. Don't get a Samsung drive. Spend a bit more for a WD or Seagate. 5. It depends on the exact power supply. If it doesn't have a 24 pin or 20+4 pin main connector and a 4 pin aux connector, it's not suitable. What's the brand and model? |

1. Didn't necessarly want nvidia. I am using this computer as an ACAD workstation. I was looking at a ATI for the workstation. I am not going to be doing much rendering or 3d stuff so how big of a card would I need. Do I need to use a crossfire video card on a ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard or can I use any ATI video card?
2. 3200+ for $15 more sounds good. 3. Whats wrong with hypermemory? Is their a better ATI card for that price? 4. I will get a differant hard drive. 5. Looks like i'll need a new power source. It's only 300w I guess. |

glc was referring to the chipset on the motherboard, not the video card. The Asus A8N5X has an Nforce4 chipset from nvidia, and it is superior to the ATI XPRESS200 chipset on the A8R-MVP.
Hypermemory means the card taps into your system ram if it needs it, rather then ram on the card itself. This brings down performance, so stick with a non-Hyper memory card.

The Nforce4 chipset is part of the motherboard. It controls the traffic of information moving around the various parts of the system. Though it is made by a graphics card company, it doesn't have anything to do with the graphics card you choose. You can use an Nvidia card or an ATI card. My main system has an Nforce4 and an ATI Radeon card, no problem.
As glc suggested, if you are looking for a cheaper card that will last until an upgrade, the ATI Radeon X550 is a good choice.

How does this look now? Only about $25 more. I will need a new power source. How many watts do I need? Whats a good one? Is this motherboard good for future upgrades, like processor and video card? Thanks glc and Alaron for the help.

Good choices.
Here's a good power supply that won't break the bank: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952 |
