please help, i just screwed some stuff up
I was building my computer and i tried to take the heatsink off to make sure there wasn't too much thermal grease on my CPU, and the cpu came out along with it, bending some pins in the process. So i figure i'm going to send the CPU back and say it was DOA. do you guys think that i messed up my motherboard too? taking off the heatsink brought the whole processor up with it, and i have the feeling that the ZIF socket got screwed up also. Should i send the mobo back and say it was DOA also?
aside from my idiocy, im confused about some other stuff. with my case came a cable with a label on it that says 1394. What is this cable for? its coming out of the front part of my case, and i can't find anywhere for it to go. I also have a blue and white cable coming from the front of my case and i cannot find a place for that either I accidentally broke one of my ATA cables. Where can i get new ones, and is it okay to put my HD and DVD drive on the same ATA cable, or should i get two? My case fan (already installed with case) does not have the 3-pin connector to go into my mobo. instead it has male and female (somewhat large) 4 pin connectors. what do i do about this? thanks for the help guys, i cant believe i broke this stuff but hopefully ill be able to get this pc running somewhat soon, and hopefully i wont break any more crap |

EDIT:
i bent the pins back and everything works, although i still need to find out what those stray cables are for, and how to hook up the PC's integrated audio. my cpu is at 35 degrees and my statem is at 28. is that ok? |

Yeah, that happens. But it can usually be bent back in place which it looks like you did. 1394 is for Firewire, which your motherboard may or may not have (which one do you have?). If it does have firewire that cable will plug into the Firewire header - refer to the manual for the locations of those and the USB headers (if the case has front USB). A blue and white cable? Two individual wires? are there any labels on the end? and what case is this? (maybe someone here has that case).
I think if it's a 80 conductor IDE cable you'll be fine with both the HD and DVD on the same cable - provided you can phyiscally connect the two together. (most likely you got the 80 conductor one - they should be really small wires as opposed to larger wires in 40 conductor cables) I'm pretty sure you can do that with 80 conductor cables, but not 40 conductors - but I might be wrong there. It will work either way, but the hard drive is probably ATA100 and the DVD is probably ATA66, which means the hard drive may have to slow down to ATA66 on the 40 conductors, if I recall correctly. You can pick up IDE cables probably from any computer store. The fan will plug into the power supply (which is better than plugging it into the motherboard). That's the same type of connector as the one that powers the hard drive and DVD drive. It sounds like a pass through cable meaning you can plug one end into the power supply and then the other into the DVD drive, if you see what I'm saying. As for the onboard audio, if your case has ports on the front you'll have to check with the motherboard manual for the location of the audio header (2 rows of pins - but not to be confused with the USB or Firewire headers - the manual will tell you which is which and it's also printed on the board). The audio wires from the case should be labeled and you just have to match the wires up with the pins and plug them in (the manual will also tell you which pin is what). Sometimes the labeling will vary between the mobo and the case, so if you're not sure just post what the motherboard has them labeled as and what the case has them labeled as and we will try to match them up. You can always use the rear jacks too, and there's nothing to hook up for that... Those are excellent temperatures. BigRed: It looks like we posted at the same time

That is a Firewire cable and can be used if your motherboard has a firewire header......DO NOT try and plug it into a USB header. In edit: Blue beat me to it

You don't want to put a hard drive on a 40 wire cable - it's only ATA33.
I'd recommend you use two 80 wire cables - one for the hard drive and one for the DVD drive. That's doing it *right*. As a matter of ethics - if *you* are the one that caused the damage due to improper handling, it's not right to claim DOA. |

glc is right.I'm glad you could fix it.
Use 2 80 wire ide ribbons and set the drives to CS. On the 80 wire ribbons, blue end goes to mother board, black end is for master, middle, grey,is for slave, drives jumpered to CS(cable select) |
