Hi everyone. So I'm looking to build my first computer. For the past few weeks I've been reading up on how to do it and what I'll need. After browsing Newegg, I've decided on these parts:
The Case - Thermaltake XASER, Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum/Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811133154 The PSU - Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817103931 The Motherboard - ASUS P5ND2-SLI Socket T (LGA 775) NVIDIA nForce 4 SLI Intel Edition ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131578 The Processor - Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T Processor Model BX80547PG3200F http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819116197 The Graphics Card - eVGA 256-P2-N516 Geforce 7800GT CO SE 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130256 Ram - A-DATA V-Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Unbuffered System Memory Model VDBDB1A16 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820211131 I'll be using Windows XP for my operating system. It all comes out to $945.28 with the shipping cost. Now for my questions. Will I be able to reuse my CD, DVD, and Floppy Drives from my old computer? And more importantly will I be able to reuse my Hard Drive with everything intact? Please note that I will eventually buy a new Hard Drive but at the moment I have almost reached my spending cap of $1000.So does everything I have picked out work? Am I missing anything or are there any improvements that could be made without breaking my spending cap? Thanks in advance for all the help!

I just built a rig with the same motherboard and cpu and you are gonna love it! I had a different case, psu & memory but those you picked out should be ok. As far as drives from your other system, they should work ok. Be sure you get the latest drivers for all of them.
I just noticed the case is an extended ATX and the board is an ATX...better check that out Last edited by ptodd; 03-04-2006 at 01:20 PM. |

You can reuse the hard drive, but you will need a new copy of Windows. You won't lose your data and programs.
That Aopen ram is not on the Asus QVL for that motherboard, and it is not on the SLI approved list either. Cd, dvd and floppy drives, no problem reusing those. Power supply, motherboard, CPU and video card, no problems there, all good quality and compatible. That case is not compliant with Intel's thermal specifications, list is here, This is the only Thermaltake case that meets the specs. EATX is not a problem, an ATX board will work in an EATX case.

Thanks for the replies.
So how about this for RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145538 And you're suggesting this for the Case (instead of my orignial choice): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133143 Thanks. |

That case is fine.
No need for XMS ram, If you can spend a few extra dollars, try this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146053 Two sticks give you a Dual Channel performance boost. Otherwise: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820161401 Valvan, he has an Antec PSU in the original post.

With Intel, dual channel ram gives you a noticeable boost. Here's the stuff I'd use for 1gb total:

One more thing, just so I don't end up shooting myself in the foot with this. The Hard Drive I'm planning to use is a Maxtor 6Y060L0. This will work in the system, right? Please tell me I'm right...

Yes. Why not get a single 2x1gb ram kit instead of 4 modules?

The hard drive will be coming from a namebrand computer I got directly from Gateway a few years back. Eventually I'll buy a new hard drive but I've already hit my budget, so...

You won't be able to reuse the Gateway XP load - you are going to have to buy a new copy of XP and do a repair reinstall.
