Are They Dead?

I am using a Sempron 3400+ with a MSI K8T Neo-V motherboard. When I have the processor and the processor fan installed in the motherboard and attempt to start the computer, nothing happens. No fan movement, just nothing. However, when I unplug the ATX 12V connection the fans will start spinning, but nothing else. Also, I have tried this with the motherboard outside the case, as instructed here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409. I believe that either the motherboard or processor is dead, but I have no resources to be able to test either in a different system. So which would you think?

Hi nazgul533,

Welcome to PC Mechanic !!

What else is installed? Do you have the RAM and video card installed when you attempt to start the computer?

Yes, I have 512MB of memory installed, but I have tried starting it both with and without the memory, and even tried another stick of memory, to no avail. And I do have a video card connected, but again, I have tried starting the computer both with and without the video card, no effect. And I made a mistake in my first post. When I have the ATX 12V plugged in and try to start the computers, the fans will move a little, I don't mean like spin around. They just sort of moved. Then they stop, and I can't get that to happen again unless I unplug and replug the computer.

Now I'm thinking that it could be the power supply, since it just doesn't boot when ATX 12V is connected. But I just bought this power supply, it is brand new.

What brand power supply are you using?

Between a CPU and motherboard, I'd suspect the motherboard to be bad first.

Do you have another compatible power supply you can swap in to test with?

Or you could try the Cooler Master PSU in another computer just to see if it does work properly.

I tried the Cooler Master in another computer and it did the same thing, the fans ran, but the system didn't boot. So that must be it (hopefully). Thanks!
