New Board doesn't recognize old HDD

So, I have a system that i am putting together... New MB with a new AMD 64. 128 video card and 512megs of ddr 400. The whole system is basically new with the exception of the HDD. So the old system was running XP and 2 HDDs. So the master was running xp.

plan was to upgrade the core and just run the same HDD's. reinstall some drivers and what not but keep old files. anyways well i get the whole system put together in one piece. Install everything and power her up. Starts fine, first thing i do is change the BIOS ( just date, time etc....) It's recognizing both HDD's and both ROM's. So i save and exit and reboot. It goes into post and pauses on "verifying DMI pool data"..... and flashes a blue screen for less than a second and reboots. does that over and over.

So i took out the master and plugged in the slave by itself (as a master) and it starts to boot into windows 98. (slave was running 98). So am i missing something obvious that i am overlooking. I know a ton of new drivers need to install but why is the slave booting into 98 but the master (XP) won't let me.

MB drivers shouldn't matter to much cause otherwise i wouldn't be able to boot into 98 from the slave.??
