My First Boot
Hi all,
Have just finished assembling my new system but am having a problem with getting in to the BIOS. When i switch it on it first comes up with information about the graphics card and RAM then on to a splash screen with the picture of a viper and my mobo model type. It then just switches itself off. I have had it past this point once and got in to the BIOS but only had enough time to quickly flick through the options before it shuts itself off again. Cant really see what the problem is as everything seems to be working fine Could there possibly be a short in there somewere? The case has fan controls, temperature meter, etc. could that possibly be a problem? Asking here first before i start to disassemble and start from scratch again... System spec: P4 3.4MHz HT ECS RS400-A motherboard 512 DDR400 PNY Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800GT "Goes Like Hell" 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E 80Gig Western Digital HDD DVD-RW (poached from a Dell) Jeantech Apollo JN8005 case Hope someone can help! |

Sounds like an improperly installed heatsink to me. Take it off... remove any and all thermal compound... reapply some new stuff(arctic silver pwns), and reinstall the heatsink ENSURING a proper fit.
BTW, Welcome to PCMech! Enjoy your stay.

wow thanks for the quick reply! Come to think of it I mounted a brand new cpu with a new heatsink and fully intact thermal interface material but had to remove it halfway through the build and might have torn the thermal material in doing so. Will remount it and see what happens, thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the link... Ideally i would order a new part from the states but as i live in the UK and time is a bit of an issue for me would it be adequate if i spent a bit more and used a shop bought thermal compound like Arctic Silver?

Using 3rd party thermal compound will void the retail processor warranty.

If I have already installed the CPU myself and i am not a 'professional' has that not already voided the warranty?

Nope. As long as you use the supplied heatsink and thermal material, you have a warranty.
