My first build

I'm planning on buying my very first rig. Read so much here that I can almost no longer see the trees because of the forest.

Hence any input being most welcome.

I live in the Netherlands, so can't order from newegg. Instead I'll settle for stores nearby, which should save me some on shipping.

The store that seems to be the cheapest, and closest by as good fortune has it, is Zercom: http://www.zercom.nl/
(clicking on "catalogus" should get you to the product overview)

Another store that seems oki is graficall: http://www.graficall.nl/Producten~ca...nderdelen.aspx

Anyways, here goes!

Case: Aopen QF50C ATX 300W 24-Pins PSU Blauw

http://www.aopen.nl/products/housing/QF50series.htm

€46,10

MOBO: Asus P5GD1 Pro 915P Sound LAN SATA-RAID

http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=...20PRO&langs=01

€91,60

Processor: Intel Celeron D 341 S775 2.93Ghz

€88,40

Memory: Corsair 512MB DDR2 64MX64 Value Select. PC667. Cas 4 (2x)

€122,40 €

HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 80GB 6V080E0 (SATA)

€53,90

DVD: ASUS DVR 16X Double Layer 6X DL.Retail. White

€43,00

GRAPHIC: AOpen GeForce 6200 TC 16MB DDR 32b PCI-e. DVI-I. Passive Aeolus 6200TC-DV16

€56,00

SOUND: Creative SoundBlaster Live 24-bit Retail

€27,30

NETWORKCARD: Edimax NE2000 UTP 100Mbit PCI

€7,40

TV: Asus My Cinema-P7131 Dual

http://www.computer-onderdelen.nl/de...ma-p7131_dual/

€53,10 at Zercom

USB-FIREWIRE: Silverstone ACC FP31B Black 3.5" USB. Firewire. Audio. MIc front adapter

Silverstone ACC FP31B Black 3.5" USB. Firewire. Audio. MIc front adapter
Dimension 100mm (W) x 25mm (H) x 50mm (D)

€11,30

Which makes a total of: €600,50

Still a lot for my wallet since I'm downright poor, i.e. if cheaper is possible without much quality loss than I'd gladly hear it. By the by, I already have mouse-kboard-monitor-speakers.

The computer will be primarily used to download lots and lots and play games like Civilization IV and Morrowind, and also serve as music box. The TV is new and optional, not that needed, more a novelty that I could do without but would like to have. Especially since I can't watch tv otherwise.

Anyways, looking forward to hear what you guys think of this.

To save a few bucks you can drop the network card as the mobo you selected has onboard. Also the onboard sound isnt to bad if your not into high quality audio editing or anything the onboard audio should do fine. Just my 2 cents

Switch the RAM to DDR400. You can't use DDR2 in that board. Use this: Corsair 512MB PC3200 256MB x 2 DDR VS512MBKIT400

If you are gaming, drop the 6200TC. The TC stands for Turbo Cache, meaning the card uses your system ram, making it the equivalent of onboard video. I would switch it for at least this: Asus GeForce 6600 128MB DDR PCIe. DVI.Extreme N6600/TD

Lastly, the power supply in that case is poor quality and probably doesnt have the 24pin power connector that your motherboard needs. Try the: Antec Solution SLK3800B ATX 400W Zwart

All of the above selections come from Zercom.

Alaron, the AOpen power supplies are made by FSP, and it is 24 pin. It's high quality. However, the Antec will have more headroom for the video card.

Do you think the lack of extra headroom with the AOpen would cause a newbie at building any troubles, Glc? The Antec is going to stretch my budget by an extra €50,- so unless it is necessary I will stick with the AOpen.

Thanks for your input!

Allrighty, updating my new 'dream configuration'

Made a few changes and would like to hear what the pros think of it.

The store I'll be buying from: http://www.zercom.nl/

Case: Antec LifeStyle Sonata II ATX 450W

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=9276

€ 114,20

MOBO: Asus P5GD1 Pro 915P Sound LAN SATA-RAID

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=2005

€ 91,60

Processor:Intel Celeron D 341 S775 2.93Ghz 533Mhz FSB 256Kb Boxed

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=9617

€ 79,10

Memory: Corsair 1024MB DDR400 2K

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=5050

€ 80,60

HD: Maxtor DiamondMax 10 80GB 6V080E0

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=15018

€ 50,90

DVD: Asus DRW1608P2S/D 16x Dual-layer

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=15916

€ 41,20

Total of: € 457,60

Graphic card? No idea. I spend the last week reading reviews and the GeForce6800GS seems to be the best deal in that price range. Is this a correct assesment? And if so, what graphic card in the 120 to 150 euro price range at zercom would you recommend?

I decided to wait with the tv-card so I can spend more on a good graphic card.

Also, I want to install Linux/Ubuntu but I realized that because I want to play games I might have to install XP too, or did I get the wrong idea? Otherwise I'll have to shell out some for the OS. Buggers! lol

Anyways, thanks in advance for any feedback!

Allrighty, thats an extra € 100 for the OS then. For graphic card I'm considering: Club 3D GeForce 6800 GS 256MB DDR3 PCI-e DVI CGNX-GS686

http://www.zercom.nl/index.php?p=35&f=1&a=16584

€ 207,70

Quite a bit more than I planned to spend, but compared to the 6600 series the difference in quality justifies the extra costs if I'm correct?
