frustrated

Hello all:

I am new to the world of PC building and decided to delve into it when my trusty ol' Dell (which I am still not done paying for) packed it in. I went and bought a new motherboard, memory, graphics card, and case to go along with the rest of the stuff from the Dell (HDD an DVD drives, 3.5'' drive, sound card)

Once I got everything physically installed I held my breath and hit the 'power' switch. Much to my delight, I got the BIOS. I went through it according to my manual and saved the settings and excited at which point the screen went blank. now when I turn the machine on nothing happens, can someone please give me a hand?

Can you give us a list of what you are working with? The power supply wattage and brand too.

Please check that the video card and monitor are connected properly.

You may have a compatibility issue with the Dell psu and the standard ATX mobo. Often times Dell psu's and mobo's use a proprietary wiring scheme. Check your 20 pin connector against this ATX standard and see if the wires are all the same colors in the same holes.

Are you using the hard drive from the DELL?

Does it still have the OS installed on it?

Which operating system is it?

It may be looking for the DELL BIOS on the original motherboard and since it doesn't find it the boot process is stopped.

Thank you, I will check. The thing is the BIOS came up the first time but once I saved and exited thats when it stopped working

Why would the new BIOS have come up the first time then?

What Dell model was this?

One thing I could see is the added memory and beefier video card may have over-taxed the power supply... (assuming you did add more memory and an upgraded video card)

I did upgrade memory and graphics card. However after a trip to Future Shop to pick up some components to follow all the advice I received I have the BIOS again only it said 'system hung up due to improper CPU speed setting'

At least now I have a little more storage space and a beefier power supply! Thanks for all the help guys and gals, and if I need a hand down the road I know where to come!
