Front Panel Headphone wouldn't mute speakers

I built this PC about 4 months ago and everything was working fine. I have front panel Headphone, Mic and USB ports. The Headphone jack was working fine until recently when I noticed that when I plug in the Headphone, it doesn't mute the external speakers anymore. I can hear the sound through the headphones as well the external speakers. Before, as soon as I used to plug in the Headphone, the speakers would be muted.

What could have gone wrong here. Could it be the hardware issue or some OS settings got changed. How can I diagnose the problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Subhash.

I am not connecting any microphone, just the Headphone. Plugging Headphone should mute the external speakers. Right ?

I have not touched mobo for 2 months now. I don't see any reason for something getting loose in there.

Thanks.

I did not touch anything inside the computer. As I said, it was working fine before and now it wouldn't. Where do I check in the bios ?
