splat Final question before my first build is ordered

Somebody recently told me that there might be some issues between a SATA II hard drive and a SATA I motherboard. I was unable to find a SATA II AMD motherboard with nforce4 chipset AND SATAII, and likewise all the 250 gig SATA I hard drives were actually more expensive.

Oh yeah, do I have to buy any extra cables, or will they all come with the cables I need?

So heres a basic rundown of what I've got going so far, maybe you guys can catch something that I missed.

Case
ASPIRE X-Navigator ATXA9NW-AL
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144125

Motherboard
ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/product/Produc...82E16813131569

Processor
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT Socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103535

Hard Drive
Western Digital Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144417

RAM
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440

Video Card
Leadtek PX7300GS TDH 256MB Geforce 7300GS 256MB Onboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814122239

I wanna keep the build under $650, and i must keep the AMD and the Nvidia, and I do like the Case :P
Well thats it. Please give feedback and suggestions.

I just finished putting my system together - like 4 hours ago. Had one small hiccup but it was my fault, and now everything is running fine.

I have a SATA II hdd on a SATA I mobo (the same board you're planning to order) and so far, no problems (*knocks on wood*).

The motherboard came with two SATA drive cables and it seems like it also came with a SATA power cable adaptor (though the PSU I ordered came with SATA power hookups). The mobo also comes with a floppy IDE cable, a HDD IDE cable and a 2nd IDE cable (for your optical drives).

The only thing I didn't have that I needed was extra screws to mount the hard drive (it's OEM and comes with nothing but the drive and the silica gel packet)... though your case might come with them (I reused my old case).

You don't have any optical drives (CD/DVD), floppy drive or an operating system... so I assume you're gutting an old computer for this build?

Other than the things I mentioned above, it looks like you have a nice set up there.

Good luck!

I actually found out that there are SATA II mobos with nForce4 chipsets, but they have to be nForce4 Ultra. So I decided to get this instead:

EPoX EP-9NPA3ULTRA Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813123258

I didn't even think about OEM. Both my hard drive and my CD/DVDRW drive are OEM. I dont' have any extra screws laying around my house (maybe a few, but just to be safe), so where can I get any cables/screws for these, and how do I know which ones to get?

Thanks, Thidranki

Very NICE case there. Did I've not tried SATA II on a SATA I before. Let me know how it goes.

This is kinda a n00b question, but how can I install drivers if I need the drivers to run the parts?

If a driver is required to install Windows - which it may or may not be - you will press F6 at the start of Setup when prompted to install the storage driver from a floppy. Everything else can be taken care of after Windows is installed.

Then you need to start researching whether all your components are compatible with the distro you are going to use - and start lining up drivers for the items that aren't supported by the install.
