Boom Will this set-up blow up?

I've been interested in building my own PC for a while now, so I'm going to be using some parts from my old PC (Tower Case, Power supply, monitor etc) and going to be buying some brand new ones. As I'm half broke it's not exactly a power pc, but it'll do I guess...

I was wondering if anybody could see any glaring problems in compatibility on this pc?

Processor + Heat sink - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 512KB Inc Fan

Motherboard – ASRock S939 Athlon ULi m1695 ATX AL

RAM - CRUCIAL 1GB DDR PC3200 400MHz

Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce 6600 512MB PCI-Express

Hard Disk Drive - Maxtor 6L200M0 Diamond Max 10 200GB 7200RPM SATA/150 8MB

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Marc

Well, you can do a lot better without spending a lot more money.

1. Lose that Asrock board and get an Asus A8N5X.

2. Get a Corsair Value Select 2x512mb dual channel PC3200 kit.

3. Instead of buying a 512mb video card, go faster core with 128mb - a 6600GT.

The BIG question is what power supply you currently have - it's most likely a 20 pin unit which cannot be used in a PCI-Express system. Plan on 40 bucks for a proper 24 pin unit - that will get you a 400 watt Fortron or similar quality.

Thanks very much for the advice... Concerning the PSU, I was wondering if I could just buy a 20 pin to 24 pin converter instead?

That wouldn't be a good idea. PCI-E boards require 24 pins because, simply put, they need more power. Buying a converter just ensures the connector fits, it doesn't supply the required power.

The PSU is an important part of your system. Check out the power supply reference thread, stickied at the top of the General Hardware forum, for the good and bad brands.
