Building a simple PC

Hi Everyone

Someone needs a computer for just basic stuff like internet, email, dvd burning, XP Home Edition, etc. nothing sophisticated, no games, video, audio production or any high end application nothing on that level. Just the average computer but still a well reasonably built computer.

Can someone here advise on hardwares to get to build such a computer?

Price range?

Thanks
Dave

if low end, low buget, get a dell along with their rebates, you could save quite a bit.

AMD or Intel? Give us a budget for just the case and its contents, including operating system.

oops cross posts...

Say about $800 Intel but AMD would be kool to look at too.

Thanks for that advise though.

Content Guestimate
Mid Tower Case
100GB HD
DVDROM
XP Home
512K RAM
56k Modem
CRT Monitor but they like LCD
CPU Speed? I guess 2GHz maybe?

For low budget basic system like that, a Dell or other major brand would be a better deal. Building yourself, you just can't match the bulk parts prices they have access to. Look around, and if you still want to build, we will of course be glad to help you out.

Yes they looked around. Would be nice to see what building one can offer.

Thanks

Alright, lets see what we can do while sticking to good brands. I would say stick to on-board video. I'm writting this before working on the parts list, but I'll make sure to list a motherboard with a PCI-E x16 in case they want to add a video card later on.

Asus A8N-VM Motherboard $78.99

Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Core CPU - Retail $135.00

1GB (2 x 512) Corsair ValueSelect - Retail $66.50

Two 256mb sticks are about the same price. A single stick of 512mb would be about $20 cheaper if you need to cut some money.

Antec Solution Series case with 350watt PSU 75.00

Western Digital 120GB SATA II Hard Drive 75.00

NEC DVD burner with dual layer support 37.99

Windows XP Home with SP2 - OEM 89.95

If you need the modem, any will work. But just to keep my numbers accurate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825132002 14.00

Total: 572.44

That gives you a few hundred to play with monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, whatever.

Please clarify - I want the budget for JUST the case and contents including OS unless you already have one (please indicate) - NO monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. 800 bucks for that is a heck of a lot more than a basic PC. When you do that I'll work you up an Intel build.

Hey GLC

They really don't know specifically what they want so I am trying to get the list together for them. I used to build them a while back I'm just not up-to-date.

Any help will be appreciated as my list is only a rough.

XP Pro if the difference is not more than say $50/$60 otherwise Home
CPU 2GHz more or less
FSB 800
Mid Tower Case 400/500W
100GB HD
1GB RAM
DVD RW ROM
Floppy
56k Modem
Sound Card

Not sure about a reasonably good motherboard. Personally I like the ABit and Asus

Enough money left over to get the other parts not listed, monitor etc. reasonably priced.

Hopefully I did not ommit anything as it's off the top of my head.

Adjustments welcomed!

Thanks
Dave

Enough money left over out of WHAT EXACT FIGURE to get EXACTLY WHAT, please? Otherwise, give me a figure for EXACTLY what I asked for, please.

800 bucks for the ENTIRE system? Including speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, what? Monitor size and type?

Help me out here a bit, please. I've got to have a number to work with to put you together a balanced system.

Just a hair over 800 bucks - but sales tax will push it up to right around $900. Note that this includes *everything* for a complete turnkey system. No way can we do a 800 FSB Intel in this budget - and for a basic system you don't need it. These are all *quality* components, no cheap junk here.
