Building/Configuring New PC (entertainment hub)

Hello, I want to build a home entertainment system around a pc I want to buy with these features:

I want to watch HDTV on my monitor
I want to record TV programs (like TIVO)
I want to be able to copy DVD's
I want to record and create music CD's

I am thinking maybe Dual-core?
I am not sure aobut the Operating System
The CPU will deffinitely be 64 bit
I used to play video games a lot, so I want to have that option.

Please, I'm not sure where to start, I want all of these options on my system, if possible. I'm not familiar with the options that are available in today's market and I don't know who to ask.
I think I'm in the right place, there seems to be a lot of knowlede in the forum here.

You don't need a shopping list you need a reading list.

Those should start you off.
Keep this in mind about any monitor/video card combo you buy : http://arstechnica.com/articles/paed...hdcp-vista.ars
It must be HD capable.

Set a budget for yourself when you're done reading.
Dual core is a given now but Intel or AMD is your personal choice and they will be 64 bit capable.

My budget is under $1500, I'm thinking AMD and I don't know about the gaming...I haven't played in a long time, but I am on a 8 yr old Emachine.

The PC I'm considering Configurating is here: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/ultra8500.asp?v=d

I would get a CRT monitor instead. If you want to reconfigure and show me what you come up with...configure it, add it to the Shopping Cart and click the plus sign on the left to display the specifications, you can copy and paste what you choose from there, thanks.

I would not use those types of sites...build it yourself, you'll can get all high quality parts and they tend to charge you a bunch for the higher end systems. That particular site has a www.resellerratings.com rating of 5.58/10, that's not good. Their customer and RMA service rating is horrible, 4 and 2.75 out of ten.

Look at getting the parts from www.newegg.com , you'll get much better service and a better deal.

I agree with blue.
If you want a home entertainment computer do the homework.
That site's rating makes it one to avoid.

Consider these :

cpu : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103562

motherboards : non-SLI board
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530

memory : download the motherboard manual and buy the ram they recommend to run with it. You don't need super premium ram if you're not overclocking. If you want other choices use the configurator at Crucial or Corsair .
Crucial : http://www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=RAM
Corsair : http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair...or_search.html
You will need at least 1 GB but 2 GB would be better.

video cards : ( You seem to setting up as an occassional gamer but you have a major interest is movies and video so for you I recommend an ATI card with AVIVO which out does anything nVidia has at present )

This much is no problem but then we run into your desire for HDTV, your budget and also reality.
So first, what's in your area?
Do you intend to do this with a cable connection?
HDTV cards are for on-air broadcast and AIW cards won't work at all for this, nor do they play nice with Windows MCE which is why I didn't recommend one.
If Sony and Warner Bros. follow through on their promise about copy protection, and you get a BlueRay or HD-DVD drive for your computer , you will be able to watch high definition DVDs but that won't help you with tv shows (That's assuming your budget survives buying either.).
If you get a regular tv card to use with cable you may, I said may, be able to replace it at a later date.
You still on board with this?
