Running XP Through External

I've got a pretty powerful external DVD/CD burner from Sony that I'd like to use for the primary DVD/CD drive for my new computer. Why go buy a second drive when this one just sits here for 90% of the time anyway? SO....

Is it possible to use an external DVD burner as a drive that the motherboard can read and use for the initial installation of Windows XP? Will it recognize the use of a USB port peripheral through the CBOS screen with the order of loading? Thx...

If your motherboard bios will recognize the usb drive and allow booting from usb drives it will work.

Okay, made some headway. I'm in the CMOS screen, and the MSI K8N Diamond mother board I'm using just doesn't seem to recognize my USB ports for some reason. It finds the keyboard to adjust the settings, can read the following for boot devices: 1st Floppy Drive (there is no A drive), HDD Maxtor (the hard drive), Network Yukon PXE (???), or the Nvidia Boot Agent 222 (not sure, graphics related, I imagine).

I'm figuring that I'm going to have to run out a buy a cheap $20 CD drive at Best Buy tomorrow, if nothing else, just for installation purposes.

I could have sworn that I saw SONY USB in a flash, but I can't find it again...hmm...odd...and you would think that a newer MOBO like this would support reading USB, but...??

Well, thanks again gang. One step at a time, but it's coming along.

When the pc boots look for an option to call up the boot menu. Your mobo may or may not have that option but the option should be in your bios somewhere to boot from usb.

I've been to the "boot order" screen, which gives me the list above, as well as the peripheral section, and it says that both USB 1.1 and 2.0 are "active".

Hmmm...

I am not sure but you may have to set it up as a bootable device for the bios to boot from it even if it is in the boot order. Read this article. You should be able to get it to boot after this.
