Built new PC but can't Play Games. Help!!
I recently built a new pc but i'm having issues playing 3D Games. All 2D games and applications work perfect but when i play half life 2 for example, the rendering gets all messed up.On some occasions the game will play normally for 10 mins before crashing, but on other occasion, it will happen instantly. I don't thint its to do with overheating. I have a Gainward 6600GT and i even got it replaced with a new one but there was no difference. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers but still nothing. Has anyone any experiece of this problem?
My full system spec is Antec 430 W PSU Intel P4 650 3.4GHz 2M L2 Abit Aw8 Mobo OCZ Gold 1GB 4200 DDR2 RAM 2x512 Zalman cu CPU Fan Gainward 6600GT 256Mb Any help is greatly appriciated. Cheers Baz |

lower your games resolution. If you have it on high, i dont know if your card can handle Hl2 on high. Push it down to mid to low and see how it does.
check your cards and cpu temps and see what they are at |

Its not just HL2. C&C Generals also crashes. I've tried lowering the resolution and it makes no difference. The GPU definetly isn't heating up. Not sure about the Processer tho.

Have you tried updating your graphics card drivers?
Or in some cases... do you have ANY drivers installed for your graphics card? |

yeah i've reinstalled the drivers on many occations. I'M running the latest NVidia driver at the moment. I've followed att the rules like unstalling all the old NVidia drivers first, turned off all anti-virus motoring and installed new ones.

I also tried that. I'm now running Directx 9.c. The card came with Directx 9.b. Cheers for the advice tho.

Do you have some spare parts lying around or a buddy's computer you can test your parts in? If you do I would try your video card out in another computer. There are several possibilities but it still seems to me that it is a video card issue. A 6600GT should be able to run HL2 at pretty high res without too many issues. It should definitley be able to handle C&C Generals Maxed out.

At the moment i don't have any spare parts such as graphic cards. Can only get my hands on AGP cards but 've got a PCI-E. I'm already on my second graphics card so the chances are slim that they both had the same issue. I'll investigate into it more and give the card to a work collauge.

Good Call Bird. That is an overlooked problem with gaming. God knows I almost tore my hair out with Far Cry and sound card drivers. |

Tried reinstalling absolutly everything again. I started with the chipset driver, but still no difference. I did an installation from scratch and didn't install the sound card or the drivers for it but still the same.
I'm gonna send the grphics card back again to get it replaced a second time just to be sure to rule it out. Also getting another processor to varify that that isn't at fault. Really starting to run out of ideas at this stage. |

What's your case cooling setup look like? (ie, where you have case fans located and which way they move air)
Have you tested the RAM with something like Memtest?

I don't think it's a cooling issue. especially as the problem can occur seconds after boot up when all the components are cool. i've got 3 x 12" Fans within the pc. One cooling the HD, and two around the Processor which also keep the graphics card cool. my cpu fan is a zalman. i've tried all fans up to the max.
I haven't tried any memory test as of yet which i will do next. I've sent my existing graphics card back to vendor to completly rule it out. They told me it was possible that it came from a bad batch. Also have a new Pentium D processor which i'm going to try. When the card returns, i'll do an installation from scratch again. Thanks for the help and i'll keep you's posted on my progress. Also any other idea are welcome Regards Bazsutto |
