Why the POST?

Just a quick question:

I've read many threads about the POST beep (or screen), and I think it's a very good tool to notify you if something's wrong. However, I was wondering why other computers (IBM, Dell, Gateway, etc) all don't beep when I turn it on... is it because the manufacturer has tested the machine (hopefully) and disabled it prior to shipping?

(The motherboard does beep if no keyboard is plugged in, of course)

Thanks for entertaining my question,

The POST is part of the BIOS. I guess that most manufacturers modify their custom BIOS versions thinking it's 'easier' for most users.

That makes sense... I remember older computers beeped at startup...

Ya it kind of drives me nuts when I use someone elses computer. I like being able to see what's going on. The splash screens a lot of prebuilds have over the star-up progress can get really old. But I guess most people like the idea of computers turning into an appliance that just works....problem being they don't always.

Dell for example has a fast boot option which turns off the splash screen.
