greedo Very new first timer needing "coaching"

Ok, here's the deal I'm only 14 years old and I am in the 8th grade. I plan to finish up my current robotics project by the end of my freshman year. Then I plaan to build my own ultimate computer to haul off to college with me, however I obviously won't have the world's biggest budget and don't have any experience. I am renting books on the subject, but I feel I need another human who has done this a time or two. If you are interested in "coaching" me in this project I would like you to e-mail me at [email]grabredemeyer-at-aol.com. I need to know what places are the cheapest and best for buying quality parts, what parts to buy, although I have a good idea on what I need, and also I need someone that I can refer back to for help when I get the money saved to buy the parts. If you could give me or help me with any of this info please e-mail me at the e-mail stated above. Thank you in advance

You would do well to purchase the Build Your Own PC book and/or CD from our front page. Plus there's plenty of system recommendations in the BYOPC forums here that are free to read for suggestions. Also, I edited your email to prevent harvesting by roving bots.

I would follow the advice of P.R. and just browsing the PCmech Forums will give you a good head start on what components to buy and not to buy. When you saved enough $$$ I would post your specs here (and/or other forums) to get a critique of your build. This should give you a positive experienc on building, but seeing that you've build robots you should have no problem in building a computer. BTW Welcome to PC Mechanic

I realize this thread is probably over, but I was browsing around and saw the post by "not important". I agree with him and have over the past numerous months bought exclusively from Newegg.com. A person could go nuts trying to find the very best price and I have better things to do. That said, I have been experiencing some concerning problems. Over the past 10 days I have had three orders. Telephone contact was required in every case. It's been a shocking surprise.
I'm not going to bore the group with bloody details, but am I alone?? I hope so!

Wjperry, please start a new thread and "bore the group with bloody details" as much as you can. I think I speak for a good number of us here. If you've had problems with Newegg, we would love to know the story, and help you avoid the problem in the future if we can.

Hey guys, thanks I'm glad someone would give me pointers even though I'm only 14. I didn't expect it. I just checked out 2 books on the topics and have been searching newegg. Thanks for the tip there with my e-mail. I should try not to be so freely with personal info next time.

grocker, if you are planning on building in another year plus, things may be very different by then. Also, building a system to take to college 3 years before going will not be too wise, it will be quite obsolete by then. Right now is really only a good time to start studying up on the concepts.
