Static

I recently had a new HD put in my Sony Vaio. The warranty person was using a static wrist band w/ cord. He said that this is the way to go to have the safest install of new internal hardware. I tend to think he is correct, however, I have always installed by grounding to a screw on the chassis, both myself and whatever I am installing. Any opinions?

A wristband is a good thing to have. It's a good idea to avoid standing on carpet when working on a computer, too.

I've also seen some build-your-own PC guides that suggest connecting the power supply to the wall outlet and leaving it switched off.

This is one of those debates with no real answer. "Pros" have to say use such devices as if they don't, and you zap something, they could possible be held liable. Personally, I've never use any such device in all the years I've messed with computers and electronics, but I would also put in a waiver for you to do so at your own risk.

I've rarely used wristbands over my time with computers... As far as I can tell, no ill effects from when I didn't use the wristband... Just ground myself frequently...
