Upgrade for now/Preparing for Build later
After your help couple years back i bult this comp
2.8 prescott 1 gig A-data vitesta p4p800-e deluxe PV 5900xt Antec super lanboy Now with the new games i'm thinking i want something new however don't want to invest alot when it seems alot of things changing especially cpu's. So got an idea of buying some new things and selling the replaced parts. New Stuff: Antec p180 case £80 Some version of the 7900 GT (BFG 7900 GT OC possibly) £240 And Asus P4GPL-X for £56 Total cost about £376 Hopefully can sell Super lanboy for £40, 5900xt for £25, and the p4p800-e deluxe for £50, which comes to £115, so should only cost me £261. Just looking to see if anyone has suggestions, perhaps a different video card or case?? Mobo is limited as it's the only one with PCI-E and socket 478. Unless i want a Mobo with AGP and PCI-E. Hopefully when i got some more cash can get a total rebuild but using the video card and case, as a 7900 gt should be good for a while and can always go SLi route in future with new build. I know the video cards is bit of a sucker when it comes to power so will my 470w thermaltake do. Last edited by Moron; 03-29-2006 at 04:57 PM. |

Are you looking to reuse the Prescott CPU? The reason for asking is that the 478 socket for CPUs is basiclly dead technology. The Thermaltake may be OK.

Make sure your power supply can handle the video upgrade. Personally, I'd upgrade to LGA775 (or 939 if you want to go the AMD route) if you are ugprading to PCI-E.
Oh, that board has an Intel 915L chipset - I was afraid it was going to be a VIA or something. Keep in mind you won't be able to upgrade the CPU in the future.

Yeah i know the socket is old but my 2.8 prescott can easily run at 3.2 with my memory so it should last atleast until next year without completely being useless, it's only the graphics that i think i'm way behind.
Just need the board to get me to PCI-E graphics then will look for a full cpu and socket upgrade later Reason i'm not going for a full upgrade is that i don't quite need it yet, but the case and PCi-E video card is starting the build. might do full upgrade this time next year. Do they even make Socket 478 motherboards with PCI-Express 16? I don't know of any...except 1 from MSI but that one is for the Pentium M Dothan processors. I'm not sure your Prescott would be compatible.

The Asus P4GPL-X does have both socket 478 and PCI-Express. I checked Asus's website, and the 2.8 Prescott is supported, so he's all set.
As long as your Thermaltake 470 has the 24pin power connector for that board, you are all set. Looks like a good upgrade to me.

Ok just been chekcing out the power supply, its a 480 purepower but it only has a 20 pin cable i think and the P4GPL-X need a 24 pin power supply. Does this mean i need a new power supply for that board or can is there a way around it?????

You should get a true 24 pin ATX 2.0 power supply.
