Gaming build, Please provide comments

This build is primarily for gaming as well as music, movie ripping, downloading, light graphic design (mainly simple photoshop functions). My budget is aprox $1,000 for case, psu, mobo, processor, graphics card and ram. Everything else I have. My main concern is having enough power (I don't know how to tell how much I need) and just over all quality of the products I've selected.
Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to PCMech.

If you don't plan on using SLI, you can save money with the Asus A8N5X motherboard.

No need for XMS ram, Corsair ValueSelect will do the job just fine.

Most importantly though, change your power supply. Ultra's are low quality. An Antec 500 would be a much better choice.

Ultras aren't low quality, but the XConnect series is. Look for the XFinity series if you are wanting Ultra.

I would switch to this Antec unit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103937 It is cheaper, and has stronger power rails.

Plus, that Ultra only has a 20pin power connector. Your board needs 24pin. Another reason to go with Antec.

Thanks for all the comments so far, and thank you for the welcome.

Whats the diffrence between corsair valueselect and the type I have? I'm not too familer with RAM but I understand that its a important component in any "high end" gaming system.

True I don't think I'll be running anythign in SLI and with the money saved from the PSU and the mobo I can spruce up my graphics card quite a bit.

So to replace my mobo I should use this? Would this new mobo be considered one of the top of the line ASUS boards that is not SLI ready?

Also what did you think of the graphics card and processor selection.
To be more specific to what I want out of this computer I plan on playing BF2, World of Warcraft, and other high end games.

I can't describe my current build down to specific components because its a dell prebuilt but I can outline specs. I've had this computer for 2 years and I'm looking to significantly improve on it as far as load times, resolution and graphic quality.

P4 2.4GHz w/ HT
1.25GB Ram
128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

So would this be a better choice for ram?

this is the best bang for the buck non-SLI mobo. for RAM get a pair for dual-channel operation. here

I agree that the A8N-E is a good choice for a non-SLI motherboard.

I would go with this RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145579 Two matching sticks will give you dual channel performance boost.

Nic, your link points to PC2700, Stank will need PC3200.

So I've updated my build to the following hardware and now I'm just looking for a video card. I've only owned ATI but don't really care which brand. I'm just looking for good performance at a good price. Are there any video cards that any of you guys reccomend? Im leaning to the top 2 graphics cards. Also if you have any more comments for the current build I have listed please let me know. Thanks for all the excellent help so far.

I would choose the X1800XT since it has 16pipelines and the other two only have 12. If you're gaming, it is worth the extra performance.

Alright well the only other question I have then is on the video card it says theres a requirement for a +12V external power line from the PSU. I can't seem to find if the power supply I have listed actually has that +12V special graphics card power line..

Oh also should I be worried about cooling since I have such a large video card? The case I have supposedly have is pretty well ventilated, but could I add anything?

Can anyone tell me if it does and if it does not can another PSU be reccomended?

thanks

Edit: The video card im talking about is the SAPPHIRE Radeon X1800XT 100154SR Video Card

The power supply lead they are referring to is the 6pin connection that the video card has. That Antec PSU has one, so you're all set.

The case you chose has a 120mm exhaust fan. As long as your wiring is clean for good airflow, your temperatures should not be an issue.

Quick change of thought, for the purpose of keeping my build under $1000 do you think the processor below would be a better choice? Performance wise would it just be better to probably suck up the extra $100, or would I not really notice THAT much of a diffrence?

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 1GHz HT Socket 939 Processor

I was going to recommend that to save some money. The 3700+ is the "sweet spot" right now pricewise and performance wise for the AMD single cores. You won't notice the difference between it and the 4000 in games, and the extra money you save can be used to upgrade to the better video card. Games are ALL about the vid card, as the CPU and ram have less of an effect. Besides, the Venice core AMD's are great overclockers and with just a slight OC you could have it running at 4000+ speeds.
