This is my first time building a computer, and this is the list of components I've come up with so far. Any input, problems that you see, or suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks for your help!

eVGA 256-P2-N517-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS1GB400C3

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner W/ LightScribe and 5X DVD-RAM Write Black ATAPI/E-IDE Model SHM-165H6S - OEM

Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0 for AMD & Intel systems Power Supply

Trying to keep my budget right around $1000. I also have a 512Mb stick of RAM in my current Dell that I want to add in later.

Welcome to PCMech.

Looks pretty good. I would switch to the 7900GT, a bit more power for about the same price.

For the ram, pick up a 1GB kit, with 2 512sticks. You'll get a performance boost from Dual Channeling. Then skip the extra stick, dual channel is no good with 3.

Not to mention that, depending on the brand and speed differences, it may not work with the other 1Gig anyway. Some boards are picky about memory.
