Another First Time Builder Thread. Please Give Me Your Experienced Opinions

This machine will be used primarily for gaming along with Photoshop/Flash type programs. I would like to keep the price around 1000-1200, the more I save here, the more I can spend on a new monitor.

Please give me advice on areas that I can skimp, or need to beef up.

Concerns:
-Not everything is compatible
-Over did something that won't get full usage because another part isn't up to it
-If the floppy drive gets in the way/makes heat, I can ditch it

Nice Processor
Your motherboard requires 184 pin RAM. You have 240 pin listed.
Ditch the floppy, you can boot with Windows XP cd-rom disc.
Get Win XP Home w/ SP2 OEM instead of Win XP Pro.
Looks like you're missing a soundcard. I recommend Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS.
Add a network interface card for internet.

Parker: that board has ethernet on the board and onboard sound. Blue could try the onboard sound before commiting to a sound card.

No need to get the case with power supply, if you're replacing it with a more powerful model. Antec make cases without a PSU installed.

Avoid XP64. Not enough support for it in terms of drivers and software.

Onboard sound should be fine. If you don't think it's up to scratch, you can always purchase one at a later date.

I'd get the floppy for what they cost, they can be useful for diagnostic purposes. You don't have to have it connected all the time.

You won't need a network card, the motherboard you picked comes with onboard ethernet.

No need for the aftermarket heatsink, the retail-boxed processors come with one.

Keep the floppy drive. They aren't quite useless yet. And for $8.00 why not. Just use the heatsink that comes with th retail CPU. It will work just fine, and the after market ones void the warrenty. XP Home is more then enough for most people. Unless you know you need Pro, go with Home. You need DDR RAM for that motherboard, not DDR2. If you are going with the Antec power supply, get a case without one. Pretty much what the others have said.

Now that we have shaved a few bucks, see if you have enough to get a 7900 GT video card. It will help with gaming a lot.

From reviews about cases I guess I could use a little help. I am worried that I will get one too small/cramped/with poor airflow. From the compairing I did I was happy with the one I picked out but if anyone has a good suggestion under $100 I'll take it.

There's another Antec on Newegg that's almost identical to that one you picked out. You can see it by CLICKING HERE. Only differences I see between it and the one you had picked is that it doesn't come with a power supply and it has the side air duct (which is usually a good thing, just in case you DO end up with a heating problem). It has the same (or more) amount of drive bays and space for that extra 120mm fan you listed to go in the front panel. All that and it's only $49.

The other stuff you ditched/replaced look good now and are compatible.

EDIT: Oh yeah, bout forgot.....that case I linked to just shows the front ports as "USB" instead of "USB2.0" like the other one had, but I went to Antec's website to check the specs and they show it as having USB2.0 ports as well.

What do you guys think? Will it hold up for gaming for at least six months?

Someone tells me to get Artic Silver thermal paste, is that necessary? Also, should I spring for 2 gig of ram (1gx1g)?

No, the retail processor comes with a heatsink and thermal material. AS is not approved by AMD for warranty purposes.

Looks like a good build to me. If you like the latest games, 2GB could be a good investment. I know Battlefield 2 thrives on RAM.

Any suggestions? The con reviews for the Crosshair scare me.

Is getting two CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB)'s the best way to keep it cheap?

If you won't be running SLI, you might want to consider switching to a cheapre motherboard that's not SLI. It could save a few bucks, and there are plenty out there that come with onboard LAN and decent onboard sound.

Just a thought.

And 2GB of RAM is a good idea. It makes a noticable difference in photoshop.
