First timer: Budget gaming machine
I'm a first time builder, and I'm planning on building a budget gaming PC. I'm a student who's also in between jobs at the moment, so I'm trying to keep costs down.
I've recently been feeling the age of my current PC (Athlon XP 2400+, Radeon 9600, 760mb DDR 266), so I've decided it's time to upgrade. The problem is, I'm not wealthy. So this is what I'm planning on buying, take a look and tell me what you think. If you think it's crap, by all means say so and give a suggestion: ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 Mobo AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GB (2x512) Corsair DDR 400 Western Digital Caviar 120GB IDE HDD BFG Tech GeForce 7600GT 580mhz core, 1450mhz memory Cheapo Spire BlackFin case 450w Rosewill 24 pin PS Sony DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo All for about $771 shipped, then there's a $30 mail in rebate on the GeForce. I also need to buy an OS, I might be able to get one on the cheap at the navy base here. If not, I'll just buy XP Home from Newegg. Big questions for me right now: AMD or Intel? Should I focus more on the video card and less on the CPU? Last edited by Ex_Nihilo; 04-02-2006 at 03:36 AM. |

The one thing that I will comment on is the PSU. I don't like Rosewell..I feel they are a bit cheap. I really like this Xclio 450w
I'll let others give advice on your other parts. |

the 20+4 pin, is where you can remove 4 pins to make it compatible with 20pin mobos, or keep the 4 pins, and use them for 24 pin mobos. its for backwards compatibility.

Anyone else want to pass judgement on this system before I pull the trigger? |

Been reading about PSUs lately... Does everyone think 450w is enough for this setup?

I think it should be plenty. It looks like a good build so far. Although, I'm not positive about Sony's drives.
Also, see if you can get an SATA drive instead of the older IDE (PATA). It doesn't make much difference, but the thin cables (instead of wide ribbons) increase airflow and are easier to work with.

450 is plenty if it's 450 quality watts.

I think you need a more powerful video card. Not sure on it, though.

It should be plenty, anything more would probably bump Nihilo over budget...

For a budget system, that looks pretty good. You won't be running FEAR on the higest setting, but who wants to do that anyway? That's one scary game!
Nice job!! |
