Please could you cast your expert eyes over this new build
Hi Guys,
I'm very new to all this so please be gentle we me, hahaha. I would be grateful if you could cast your expert eyes over this spec. I’m gonna use existing monitor key-board and mouse. So really I’m just building a new rig, or should I say attempting to! This rig will be for home accounts and surfing the web. Not sure about sound?! I can't see it saying it sound-on-board.?! My budget will be about £800 - £850, nearer the £800 mark if possible. onto my spec: Dabs Xtreme DFI S939 Xpress 200 CrossFire £97.86 AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Socket 939 1MB Inc Fan £149.16 Crucial CT2KIT12864AA667 2x1GB PC2-5300 £136.73 Gigabyte VGeForce 6600GT 128MB PCI-E DVI-I £94.92 Maxtor One Touch III 300GB Combo USB2 Firewire £145.32 Sony CRX320AE/U 52x32x52x16x Combo kit Internal £22.09 D-Link DSL-300T ADSL Modem £32.93 Akasa Eclipse 62 PC EATX Midi Tower Case - Black £84.84 Akasa Active PFC 550W PSU with Sanyo Denki Fan £81.01 Total £844.86 Many thanks once again SK121 |

Don't worry about sound - you can use the sound that is integrated into the motherboard. For basic surfing/accounting, you will not need an ATI Crossfire board - look into the Asus A8N5x or the A8N-E as a less-expensive alternative.
For an Athlon 64 system, you will need regular DDR400, not DDR2. You will need RAM rated for PC-3200 (DDR400) instead of PC2-5300. The Maxtor One-Touch drive you have listed is an external hard drive. To use it as a primary hard drive inside a build, look for an internal hard drive (Maxtor, Seagate, WD to name a few) instead. For the power supply, look into a unit built by Antec or Enermax. kram

First major thing I see is that you have a Crossfire motherboard, and an nVidia video card. Now it will work with what you have now, but if you ever want to do two cards, then you need either an SLI motherboard and GeForce video cards, or a Crossfire board, and Radeon video cards.
The other major issie that might be a problem is the DFI motherboard. Now, I haven't done a lot of reading on DFIs Crossfire boards, but I know for a fact that their nForce boards are rather picky. You don't need to just look and see if the parts are basiclly compatible, but you need to look at model numbers and exact batch numbers and make sure no one has had a problem with it. DFI makes great stuff, but it's not for beginners. Do you need the DSL modem? If you have DSL already, you want a router, not another modem.

I agree with staren, You should stick to either Crossfire with an ATI card, or if you want that nVidia card; get a regular PCI-E or SLI board.
However SLI always seems to be on top of the game - that is, if you want to go down the dual graphics card road |

If it's just going to be a web-surfer, there's not even a need for a blazing fast video card to begin with, much less a dual card system. I'll second one of ASUS's boards that kram mentioned. They are probably cheaper (not sure of the conversion rate off the top of my head) and will be easier to work with.
If this is just a websurfer, there isn't a need for 2 gigs of RAM. You will have plenty with 1 gig. I'd look into the Antec power supplies, and you won't need a 550W PSU, a 450W would be more than enough.

Akasa power supplies are fine. Just make sure it's ATX 2.0 spec with a 24 pin main connector.
