First build .... raid issues
Hello there people.
Got my first build together and everything was going fine until i try to install windows xp home edition. I have set up a raid 1 in the bios setup as well as installed the drivers to it during the boot up from the windows cd. Time and time again windows does not see the hard drives and setup ends. I have the following setup: * Asus a8n-sli premium motherboard * 2 western digital caviar re wd2500yd 250 gb 7200 rpm serial ata150 * amd athlon 64 x2 4200 manchester * eVGA 7900gt 256-p2-n565 * ocz titanium 2 gb ddr 400 memory * antec sonata 2 case with 450 w power supply * floppy and a dvd burner everything else works just as it should so far (miracles never cease !) as i said, i set the drives up per instructions on the board and in bios with no luck. any ideas would be appreciated. i am kicking around just installing them as regular drives and just backing up every once in awhile but that would be quitting! thanks in advance! jim Last edited by jimtim913; 04-03-2006 at 02:17 PM. |

That board has 2 sets of SATA/RAID controllers - Nvidia and Silicon Image. You have to install the appropriate driver when you press F6, depending on which ports you are using.

I used the motherboard hookups labled raid sata and when i boot the computer the only option I have is to go into the silicon setup for the raid. i set it up in there per the instructions and then tried to install windows xp home. i put the nvidia drivers in first (like an idiot) and then realised i needed the other ones but can't get windows to recognize a damn thing. Could I have screwed something up putting in the wring drivers first?
one other thing: this could be a very stupid question but ........ the drives are brand new and unformatted. when changing faulty hard drives at work, i've never had to format one first. i could do it during install. is this different for a RAID? Last edited by jimtim913; 04-03-2006 at 11:12 AM. |

Jim, Make sure to download latest Raid drivers from Asus and use those. Also do not update Bios to 1009 until installing the NVidia chipset drivers 6.65 or later.

Let's clear one thing up. Which RAID controller do you have the drives installed on?

OK, maybe this is where I have it screwed up. How should I have it connected to the motherboard? There are 4 sata_raid plug ins on the board and 4 sata plug ins. Right now I have sata_raid 1 and sata raid_ 2 plugged into the hard drives into the serial ata interface connections on each. Is that correct or am i messed up there? If this is correct, I was under the impression that a raid 1 had to be done with a silicon image driver. Is there any special plug in i should have?

Jim, The NVidia and SI RAID Controllers are both capable of RAID 1. The A8N-SLI Premium has 8 SATA connectors. Looking at the Asus manual on pg 2-3 The 4 connectors on the right are the NVidia controller and on the left the SI controller. Your two HDD connectors should be either on the two bottom left MB connectors for SI RAID; or the two bottom right hand MB connectors for NVidia RAID.
Okay, for SI RAID configuration go to the Asus BIOS and in Advanced>Onboard Device Configuration set Silicon Image Controller to RAID Mode pg 5-30 of manual. If you are not using the Nvidia RAID then in the Asus MB Bios set NVidia RAID to disabled.pg 4-26. Now you will have to enter the SI BIOS RAID Configuration Utility. Enter by pressing F4 or ctrl+s at POST. There you will have to create your RAID 1 by initializing your HDDs(pg 5-31 of manual. Here is a cavot. I am not sure that the SI controller supports being the boot drive. I have my boot drive connected to the Nvidia controller and my data drives connected to the SI controller. So.............. If that does not work connect your HDDs on the NVidia controller and enable the NVidia controller in the MB Bios, disable the SI controller in MB BIOS. During Post press F10 to enter theNVidia Raid utility to create your raid and initialize your HDDs. Then reboot computer Then when you boot from your xp cd make sure to press F6 so you can load the appropriate RAID controller. |

Thanks rbp71854. I switched over to the NVidia raid setup and it worked fine. There might be something to the theory that the SI setup can not be made bootable for a new build. It would appear that I could set it up now if i wished, but not on a new setup. Thanks again for the help!
