problem installing WinXP on new comp

Quote:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed
hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive
to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then
restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C79524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)
I'm getting this error when I try to install Windows XP on my new build (all new parts). I've got 2 IDE hard drives and 2 optical drives, all on 'cable select'. I've tried both hdds on one cable and both optics on another cable, 1 hdd and 1 optic on seperate cables (both master) and 1 hdd and 1 optic on the same cable. In CMOS, it only recognizes channel 0 and the floppy.

Use the zero fill utility available from the hdd mfgr. web site and with the hdd on IDE1 and a CDROM om IDE2 set your first boot device to CDROM and boot with the XP cd in the drive. Allow XP to format and partition the drive. Don't plug in any more devices except the mouse & keyboard until XP loads.

Please post your complete system specs. List the parts by brand and model including the power supply.

You are trying to use a very low quality ATX 1.x spec power supply with a 20 pin main connector on a PCI-E build, which requires an ATX 2.0 power supply with a 24 pin main connector. This may or may not be the source of the exact problem, but I'd replace the power supply with a proper unit.

Now, that board has 3 IDE channels. One is on the Intel ICH controller, but the other 2 are on the Via RAID controller. Keeping this sorted out and configuring it can be difficult. Your best bet is put one hard drive and one optical on the ICH and try to get Windows installed. Then you can try to get the other IDE devices working on the Via, good luck.

I got past the error message. This is what worked

Since I am using PCI-E, how important is it that I get a ATX 2.0 PSU with a 24-pin connector? The mobo came with a (removable) plug in so that a 20-pin fits. Is that only for standard PCI use?

Now that my system is running, I want to add the second HD and Optic and reorganize them like this... if at all possible.
C: Master HD
D: Slave HD (or both on RAID)
E: (M) Optic
F: (S) Optic
How would I do this - right now the HD is F:\ and optic is C:\

Your main hard drive is F:? Do you have some kind of card reader installed? If the floppy drive also has a card reader you're going to have to disconnect the floppy drive and then reinstall Windows so that the hard drive is C:. Once that's done you can install all the other drives and then change the drive letter assignments through Disk Management.

You need to install Windows with ONLY one hard drive and one optical drive connected - nothing else, no USB devices except keyboard and/or mouse.

Yeah I had the front USB and floppy card readers connected. How do I reinstall windows then?

Also, when I first installed windows the optic installed as E: and the hard drive as F:, so when I reinstall windows is the optic going to be C: and the hard drive D:? I have both on 1 cable, the hard drive on master (cable select) and optic on slave.

Just re-run the installation process and you'll come to a screen that asks if you want to do a fresh install of Windows or repair an existing installation...choose to do a fresh install.

The hard drive should become C and the optical D.

Reinstall again - verify that NOTHING is hooked up except one hard drive and one optical drive - and this time, delete all partitions on the hard drive first.

No - you do that as part of Setup - when it sees the partitions and asks you where to install XP, you can delete the partitions there.

I got this error:

Setup is unable to perform the requested operation on the selected partition. This partition contains temporary Setup files that are required to complete the installation.

I still have the same problem and I can only think of two options. Run > format C: or start over with my second hard drive and risk screwing that up too. Ideas?

I would run a zero fill utility to wipe the hard drive and start over with a fresh hard drive.

You can use either Darik's Boot and Nuke or KillDisk.

Now that I've got main hard drive as C:, how do I add the second hard drive and second optical drive? The second and third IDE channels are on VIA RAID controller.

Just plug them in and jumper them correctly. Set the Via controller in the bios to be a standard controller, not raid.

Everything except the second hard drive is working. It shows up in BIOS, but not in My Computer.

Is your second hard drive unformatted? If so, you'll need to format before it'll appear in 'my computer'.

To do this, right click 'my computer', and go to 'manage'. Click the Disk Management option, and you should be able to see the second drive. Simply create a partition here.
