Question First build ever...want to raid0.

Hi, I would like to build the following pc and would like to request your expert advice. The PC will be used for photo/video editing, light gaming and movie storage. I would like to attempt to raid0 but maybe I'm being a bit ambitious... ... seeing as this will be my very first build.

Can someone recommend any good references as to how to raid0?

Are my chosen parts all compatible? I mean, other than the strange colour combination of a silver case with a beige DVD-RW. I listed the beige one cuz ncix were out of black.

Looks like a good setup to me.

If you aren't planning to use SLI in the future, you can switch the motherboard to an Asus A8N5X. You could also save some money buying 1 or 2 hard drives now and getting more later.

Just a tip, don't attach the card reader until after Windows is installed. Otherwise it will steal the "C:" designation.

You forgot to add RAM and an OS to that build list.

ahh... thank you for that.

Corsair Value Select PC3200 2GB 2X1GB DDR400 CL3 184PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=15448

$194.00

and Win XP Pro for $150

so the total actually will come to over $2000 if I go with the system with the SLI motherboard and 3 HDD. If I go with the just 2 HDDs and the Asus A8N5X, the total will remain at around $1700. ...

since your only using this PC for light gaming, it would be safe to go with the A8N5X - you wouldn't take advantage of the SLI option.

However the 2-3 HDD option is up to you - you have to decide if its worth the money.

To save about $50, you can get an OEM copy of Windows XP instead of the retail. It runs about $90 on newegg.com

A word of advice about RAID-0. It does not halve your read/write times, it does not change the overall speed of your computer by any significance and it doubles the chance of losing all your data from a hard drive failure.

Because of the cost factor, I don't think I will pursue the raid setup at this point.

Just wondering, is there a way to stripe and mirror at the same time?

Works out to under $1200 US

So far, I think I'm going to go with this setup. I've nixed the 2 additional HDDs and changed the case to the Antec P180 cuz it has better ventilation.
I decided to stick with the SLI motherboard so that I will have the option to upgrade in the near future.

As for winXP, I believe my school offers licenses to students for a one time nominal fee. So, I didn't include this into the grand total.

I haven't placed the order yet so I'd appreciate any comments.

No, not for two drives because striping and mirroring use the drives in two completely different ways. There is the RAID 0+1 option but that involves 4 using four drives.

Ok.. I think I'm going to take your suggestion and forego the SLI mobo. In that case, I should choose a non SLI vid card right? Can you suggest a good non SLI vid card to go with the A8N5X??

Any PCI-E video card will work in a single slot board whether it's SLI-certified or not.

The most current generation of nVidia GPU's that are PCI-E are all SLI compatable. But, by not going with the SLI - this opens up your choice between an nVidia or ATI card. However - I'd stay with the 7600GT you have selected - it seems to give good performance vs. the cost.

That's a fine parts list.

Just one tip for the build; don't connect the USB-header connection from the card reader until after you've installed XP, or it's likely to grab the C:\ drive letter.

I'll definitely be on this board crying for help once I start assembling the parts.
