In the middle of first install, have problem

Started up the pc, and went through bios and when the computer tries to load and read the hard drive the HD makes really nasty sounds like the plate is scratching internally, and then this message comes up telling me to check for viruses and "Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption

Technical information:

STOP: 0x0000007B

0xF7986640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Could this old HD be broken, or is this something else?

If it's an old hard drive, it could have a problem. Best to test it with the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. Available at all their web sites. Or download the Ultimate Boot Disk and make a CD with it. It has all the different hard drive diagnostics as well as much more.
